Balș
Balș () is a town in Olt County, Oltenia, Romania. The town administers three villages: Corbeni, Româna, and Teiș. Geography The town is situated on the Wallachian Plain and lies on the banks of the river Olteț. It is located in the northwestern part of the county, on the border with Dolj County, west of the county seat, Slatina, Romania, Slatina. Etymology There are three hypotheses about the town's name: # The locality was named after the Balșița brook. # The name comes from the Turkish language, Turkish word "Baliş" (honey), as there is a large apiculture area there. # A boyar named Balș settled here in the 5th or 6th century. Population At the 2002 census, the town had a population of 21,195; there were 20,552 Romanians, 619 Romani people in Romania, Roma, and 27 others. Petre Pandrea
Petre Pandrea, pen name of Petre Ion Marcu, also known as Petru Marcu Balș (26 June 1904 – 8 July 1968), was a Romanian social philosopher, lawyer, and political activist, also noted as an essayist, journalist, and memoirist. A native of rural Oltenia, he was always a promoter of its regional identity, which blended into peasant populism. Other than these two traits, and his iconoclastic irreverence that bordered on Anarchism in Romania, anarchism, his political opinions fluctuated several times between extremes—from right-wing conservatism to Marxism-Leninism. Beginning from the 1910s, when Pandrea was training as a cadet at Dealu Monastery, he was intimately acquainted with the power structures and ideologies of the Romanian Kingdom; it was also here that he first met the anti-liberal ideologue Nae Ionescu, who became the object of his fascination, and, for a while, an intellectual mentor. Cornel Feruță (born 21 August 1975) is a Romanian diplomat. Born in Balș, Olt County, he holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration in Bucharest and a Master of Arts in international relations from the University of Bucharest.
