Ball
A ball is a round object (usually spherical, but sometimes ovoid) with several uses. It is used in ball games, where the play of the game follows the state of the ball as it is hit, kicked or thrown by players. Balls can also be used for simpler activities, such as catch or juggling. Balls made from hard-wearing materials are used in engineering applications to provide very low friction bearings, known as ball bearings. Black-powder weapons use stone and metal balls as projectiles. Although many types of balls are today made from rubber, this form was unknown outside the Americas until after the voyages of Columbus. The Spanish were the first Europeans to see the bouncing rubber balls (although solid and not inflated) which were employed most notably in the Mesoamerican ballgame. Balls used in various sports in other parts of the world prior to Columbus were made from other materials such as animal bladders or skins, stuffed with various materials. As balls are one of t ...

The Ball (play)
''The Ball'' is a Caroline comedy by James Shirley, first performed in 1632 and first published in 1639. ''The Ball'' was licensed for performance by Sir Henry Herbert, the Master of the Revels, on 16 November 1632. Herbert, however, was not happy with the play: in a note in his office book dated two days later, 18 November, he complained that the play showed "diverse personated so naturally, both of lords and others of the Court, that I took it ill, and would have forbidden the play" – but impresario Christopher Beeston promised Herbert that everything that Herbert disliked in the play would be fixed before the performance. The desired changes must have been made satisfactorily since the play was acted by Queen Henrietta's Men at the Cockpit Theatre. The 1639 quarto publication of the play, printed by Thomas Cotes for the booksellers Andrew Crooke and William Cooke, confused subsequent generations of critics since the title page attributes the play to both Shirley and Geo ...

Balls (Sparks Album)
''Balls'' is the 18th album by the American rock band Sparks, released in 2000. ''Balls'' was a continuation of the techno-pop style that the duo had first explored on 1994's '' Gratuitous Sax & Senseless Violins'', but employed harder, more uptempo beats, as well as a direct, aggressive approach derived from acts such as The Prodigy. The album was packaged in a translucent jewel case that came in a variety of colours (red, yellow, green, blue, orange, black, and turquoise), with a reflective die-cut silver slipcase. "It's a Knockoff" was recorded for the movie ''Knock Off'' starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, directed by the acclaimed Hong Kong–based producer–director Tsui Hark (who had appeared on his own tribute song by the band on ''Gratuitous Sax & Senseless Violins''). It is featured over the closing credits. Whilst critical reception of ''Balls'' was moderately positive, it was not a success in terms of chart performance and failed to match the performance of ''Gratuitous ...

After the enormous success of ''In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (album), In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida'', Iron Butterfly modified its acid-rock sound somewhat and experimented with more melodic compositions. The band's trademark heavy guitars, however, are still evident on such tracks as "In the Time of Our Lives" and "It Must Be Love". The album reached number 3 on the Billboard 200, ''Billboard'' 200 charts, making ''Ball'' more immediately successful than ''In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida''. In RPM (magazine), Canada the album reached number 4. ''Ball'' was certified Gold in March 1969. It also spawned two minor hit singles: "Soul Experience" (b/w "In the Crowds"), an uncharacteristically uplifting song for the group, went to number 75 on the ''Billboard'' charts and number 50 in Canada, and despite its nightmarish musical tones and morbid lyrics, "In the Time of Our Lives" (b/w "It Must Be Love") managed to reach num ...
