Ballaugh
Ballaugh ( ; , ) is a small village on the Isle of Man in the parish of the same name, in the sheading of Michael. It is the only village in the parish. The parish adjoins Jurby to the north, Lezayre to the east, Michael to the south and south-west, and the Irish Sea to the west. It stretches about 5 miles or 8 km from north to south: at the extreme southern end it includes part of Sulby Reservoir, and to the west, it includes part of Bishopscourt, the former house of the island's Bishop. History The name 'Ballaugh' derives from the Manx ''Balley ny Loghey'' or "the place of the lake" cognate with loch and lough. The Ballaugh Curraghs is all that remains of this lake. The lake, which measured up to a mile in length, was drained by the excavation about 300 years ago of the silted-up Lhen Trench which, during the last ice age, is believed to have been a meltwater channel flowing north to south from the melting ice front. Ballaugh Bridge
__NOTOC__ Ballaugh Bridge is located on the primary A3 Castletown to Ramsey road and adjacent to the road junctions with the A10 Ballaugh to Ramsey coast road and the tertiary C37 Ballaugh Glen Road in the parish of Ballaugh in the Isle of Man. Description Ballaugh Bridge is a hump-backed road bridge over the Ravensdale River, located in the village of Ballaugh. Motor-sport heritage Ballaugh Bridge was part of the 52.15 mile Highland Course (amended to 40.38 miles in 1906) and the 37.50 Mile Four Inch Course used for automobile racing including the 1904 Gordon Bennett Trial and the RAC Tourist Trophy car races held between 1905 and 1922. It was also the western edge of the ''Sandygate Loop'' for the 1904 Gordon Bennett British Eliminating Trial and the 1905 Tourist Trophy Race for automobiles. Ballaugh ( ; gv, Balley ny Loghey) is one of the seventeen parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located on the west of the island (part of the traditional ''North Side'' division) in the sheading of Michael. Local government For the purposes of local government, the whole of the historic parish forms a single parish district with Commissioners. The Captain of the Parish (since 1993) is Charles Edgar Cowin. Politics Ballaugh parish is part of the Ayre & Michael constituency, which elects two Members to the House of Keys. Before 2016 it was in the Michael constituency. Geography Ballaugh is a mainly agricultural district on the north-western coast of the island. Ballaugh runs for some along the north-west coastline of the island. The average breadth of the parish is about and it covers an area of around . Ballaugh Railway Station
Ballaugh Station (Manx: ''Stashoon Raad Yiarn Valley Ny Loghey'') was a mandatory stopping place on the Manx Northern Railway that ran between St. John's and Ramsey in the Isle of Man. It opened when the line was opened and was later owned and operated by the Isle of Man Railway; it served the village of Ballaugh. Description The building was erected for the opening of the railway although there is now little sign of it on the site; the station building itself was of similar construction to the ones at both Kirk Michael and Sulby Bridge but was demolished some time after the railway closed. The station was opened in 1879 and remained open until the railway closed in 1968. Ramsey ( gv, Rhumsaa) is a coastal town in the north of the Isle of Man. It is the second largest town on the island after Douglas. Its population is 7,845 according to the 2016 Census. The Isle of Man TT Mountain Course or ''TT Course'' is a street and public rural road circuit located in the Isle of Man, used for motorcycle racing. Bishopscourt (previously known as Ballacurry, in gv, the farm of McCurry or O'Curry) consists of a 17th-century mansion house, the St Nicholas (Private Chapel) in the Church of England Diocese of Sodor & Man, and the former estate of Ballachurry or Bishopscourt Manse. Previously the official residence of the Bishop of Sodor and Man, the current Bishopscourt House and estate are now in private ownership.
