Ballard Berkeley
Ballard Blascheck (6 August 1904 – 16 January 1988), known professionally as Ballard Berkeley, was an English actor of stage and screen. He is best remembered for playing Major Gowen in the British television sitcom ''Fawlty Towers''. Life and career The son of Joseph and Beatrice Blascheck, he was born in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent. He married Dorothy Long in Liverpool in January 1929. During the 1930s, he performed regularly in the so-called " quota quickies". One of his earliest roles was as the heroic lead in the 1937 film '' The Last Adventurers''. He served as a special constable with the Metropolitan Police during the Second World War, witnessing the Blitz at first hand, including the bombing of the Café de Paris nightclub. For his service, he received the Defence Medal and the Special Constabulary Long Service Medal. Ballard MacDonald
Ballard MacDonald (October 15, 1882 – November 17, 1935) was an American lyricist, who was one of the writers of Tin Pan Alley. Born in Portland, Oregon, he was a charter member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). MacDonald wrote lyrics for a song called "Play That Barber-Shop Chord" in 1910, which became a hit with revised lyrics when it was sung in the ''Ziegfeld Follies'' by vaudeville star Bert Williams. He subsequently worked with composer Harry Carroll on "On the Mississippi" (1912) and " The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" (1912, based on the novel of the same name). He also partnered with James F. Hanley, which produced the 1917 hit " (Back Home Again in) Indiana". In the early 1920s, MacDonald turned his attention to Broadway revues, which in 1924 brought him his most notable musical collaborator in George Gershwin. Ballard Smith (baseball)
Ballard F. Smith (born June 20, 1946) is an American former sports executive who was president of the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball from 1979 to 1987. He was a district attorney in Pennsylvania before starting his sports career as vice president of the San Diego Mariners of the World Hockey Association (WHA). Early life Smith was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and attended Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois. After graduating from Carleton College and the University of Minnesota Law School, he was an attorney for five years in Meadville, Pennsylvania, before being elected district attorney of Crawford County, Pennsylvania, in 1975. Smith was the youngest district attorney in the state at the time.
