Ballachuan Hazelwood
Ballachuan Hazelwood is an Atlantic hazelwood forest currently managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust as a nature reserve. It is known as one of the best examples of Scottish temperate rainforest.https://i.rcahms.gov.uk/canmore-pdf/WP00004476.pdf It provides a habitat for many rare species such as Hypocreopsis rhododendri, hazel glove fungus which can only live in this extreme oceanic climate. The tree cover is mostly made up of Corylus avellana, common hazel stands, which are stunted due to the intense windy conditions. Location Ballachuan Hazelwood is located on the eastern side of the remote island of Seil next to the small Ballachuan Loch. The closest settlement is named Cuan Ferry, found around a kilometer to the west. Seil
Seil (; , ) is one of the Slate Islands, Scotland, Slate Islands, located on the east side of the Firth of Lorn, southwest of Oban, in Scotland. Seil has been linked to the mainland by bridge since the late 18th century. The origins of the island's name are unclear and probably pre-Gaelic. It was a part of the kingdom of Dalriada in the 7th century but by the 16th century, Seil seemed to have been primarily agricultural in nature. It became part of the estates of the Earl of Breadalbane and Holland, Breadalbane family and in the early 18th century they began to exploit the rich potential of the Neoproterozoic slate beds. The excavations from the island's quarry, quarries were exported all over the world during the course of the next two centuries. Today, the economy is largely dependent on agriculture and tourism.
