Balkh Airlines was a short-lived airline headquartered in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan. From 1996 to 1997, it operated passenger flights out of Mazari Sharif Airport using a single Boeing 727-100, competing with Ariana Afghan Airlines. Mazar-i-Sharif International Airport ( prs, میدان هوائی مزار شریف, ''Meydâne Havâyeye Mazâre Šarif''; ps, مزار شریف نړیوال هوايي ډګر) , also known as Mawlānā Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Balkhī International Airport, is located 9 km east of Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan, a 15-minute drive from the center of the city. Though it was originally constructed with 2 parallel runways, the northernmost runway has since been converted into a Taxiway. The remaining runway is 9,836 feet (2,998 meters). The airport has facilities for up to 1,000 passengers, making it one of the largest airports in Afghanistan. The Boeing 727 is an American narrow-body airliner that was developed and produced by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. After the heavy 707 quad-jet was introduced in 1958, Boeing addressed the demand for shorter flight lengths from smaller airports. On December 5, 1960, the 727 was launched with 40 orders each from United Airlines and Eastern Air Lines. The first 727-100 rolled out November 27, 1962, first flew on February 9, 1963, and entered service with Eastern on February 1, 1964. Abdul Rashid Dostum ( ; prs, عبدالرشید دوستم; Uzbek Latin: , Uzbek Cyrillic: , ; born 25 March 1954) is an Afghan exiled politician, former Marshal in the Afghan National Army, founder and leader of the political party Junbish-e Milli. Dostum was a major army commander in the communist government during the Soviet–Afghan War, and in 2001 was the key indigenous ally to US Special Forces and the CIA during the campaign to topple the Taliban government.
