Baldur Brönnimann
Baldur Brönnimann (born 1968, Basel) is a Swiss conductor. Biography Born in Basel, Brönnimann studied at the Musik-Akademie der Stadt Basel and was a junior fellow in conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. From 2008 to 2012, Brönniman was the music director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia, and from 2011 to 2015, he was artistic director of Norway's BIT20 Ensemble. Brönnimann was principal conductor of the Orquestra Sinfonica do Porto Casa da Música from 2015 to 2020. Brönnimann became the first-ever principal conductor of the Basel Sinfonietta in 2016. He is scheduled to stand down as principal conductor at the close of the 2022-2023 season. Brönnimann has conducted the music of contemporary composers such as Harrison Birtwistle, Unsuk Chin, Thomas Adès, John Adams, Kaija Saariaho, Helmut Lachenmann, and Magnus Lindberg. Baldur Bronnimann
Baldr (Old Norse also Balder, Baldur) is a god in Germanic mythology. In Norse mythology, he is a son of the god Odin and the goddess Frigg, and has numerous brothers, such as Thor and Váli. In wider Germanic mythology, the god was known in Old English as , and in Old High German as , all ultimately stemming from the Proto-Germanic theonym ('hero' or 'prince'). During the 12th century, Danish accounts by Saxo Grammaticus and other Danish Latin chroniclers recorded a euhemerized account of his story. Olga Neuwirth (; born 4 August 1968) is an Austrian contemporary classical composer, visual artist and author. She is famed especially for her operas and music theater works, many of which have treated sociopolitical themes. She has emphasized an open-ended, interdisciplinary approach in her work, collaborating frequently with Elfriede Jelinek, exploiting live electronics, and incorporating video. Pascal Georges Dusapin (born 29 May 1955) is a French composer. His music is marked by its microtonality, tension, and energy. A pupil of Iannis Xenakis and Franco Donatoni and an admirer of Varèse, Dusapin studied at the University of Paris I and Paris VIII during the 1970s. His music is full of "romantic constraint". Despite being a pianist, he refused to compose for the piano until 1997. His melodies have a vocal quality, even in purely instrumental works. Barrie Kosky
Barrie Kosky (born 18 February 1967) is an Australian theatre and opera director. Based at the Komische Oper Berlin, he has worked internationally. Biography Kosky was born in Melbourne, the grandson of Jewish emigrants from Europe. He attended Melbourne Grammar School where he performed in Brecht's ''The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui'' in 1981, Shakespeare's ''Othello'' in 1982, and later directed his first play. Among many other later famous Australian artists, he also worked at the St Martins Youth Arts Centre. In 1985, he then began studies in piano and music history at the University of Melbourne. ''Le Grand Macabre'' (completed 1977, revised 1996) is the third stage production by Hungarian composer György Ligeti, and his only major stage-work. Previously, he had created two absurdist sung "mimodramas" ''Aventures'' (compl. 1962) and ''Nouvelles aventures'' (1965). Described as an "anti-anti-opera", ''Le Grande Macabre'' has two acts and lasts about 100 minutes. Its libretto, based on Michel de Ghelderode's 1934 play ''La balade du Grand Macabre'', was written by Ligeti himself in collaboration with , director of the Stockholm Puppet Theatre. The language was German, the title ''Der grosse Makaber''. György Ligeti
György Sándor Ligeti (; ; 28 May 1923 – 12 June 2006) was a Hungarian-Austrian composer of contemporary classical music. He has been described as "one of the most important avant-garde music, avant-garde composers in the latter half of the twentieth century" and "one of the most innovative and influential among progressive figures of his time". Born in Romania, he lived in the Hungarian People's Republic before emigrating to Austria in 1956. He became an Austrian citizen in 1968. In 1973 he became professor of composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, where he worked until retiring in 1989. His students included Hans Abrahamsen, Unsuk Chin and Michael Daugherty. He died in Vienna in 2006.
