Balaustion Polyandrum
''Balaustion polyandrum'' is a species of flowering plant in the family Myrtaceae and is endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. It is usually a shrub with egg-shaped leaves, the narrower end towards the base, and white flowers with about 30 stamens. Description ''Balaustion polyandrum'' is a shrub that typically grows to high, the flowering branchlets with one pair of flowers. Its leaves are egg-shaped with the narrower end towards the base, long and wide, the lower surface narrowly keeled with one or two rows of oil glands each side of the midvein. The flowers are in diameter on a peduncle long, each flower on a pedicel long. The floral tube is long and wide, the sepals egg-shaped, long, about wide and deep reddish with a whitish border, and the petals are white, long, with about 30 stamens. Barbara Lynette Rye is an Australian botanist born in 1952. Barbara Rye has been associated with the Western Australian Herbarium, where her work as a taxonomist has been the source of many new descriptions of plants. The number of taxa recorded as described by women authors is historically very low, of the terrestrial plant species this amount is around three percent, yet in analysis published in 2019 Rye is amongst the ten most prolific women taxonomists. Born in Perth, Western Australia, she spent her childhood investigating the local flora and fauna of the Southwest Australia region, a biodiversity hotspot, and later began studies at the University of Western Australia. Barbara Rye entered the fields of zoology and botany, taking a special interest in genetics and evolutionary biology. Koolyanobbing
Koolyanobbing is located in the Shire of Yilgarn, Western Australia, north-northeast of the town of Southern Cross. Iron ore has been mined there since 1948 by a series of companies, with a break between 1983 and 1993, and since 2024. Most recently, the ore was mined by Mineral Resources and railed to the port at Esperance for export. History The place name Koolyanobbing is of local Aboriginal origin, meaning "place of large rocks" in the Kaalamaya language of the Kaprun people. The first European to visit the area was Charles Cooke Hunt in 1864 who explored the Koolyanobbing range that is situated nearby.
