Badminton At The 1988 Summer Olympics
Badminton was an exhibition sport at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. There were five events: men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. Competitions took place at the Seoul National University Gymnasium on 19 September 1988. Qualification The competitors were selected according to the results of the 1987 IBF World Championships. Han Aiping ( zh, s=韩爱萍; April 22, 1962 – October 16, 2019) was a Chinese badminton player in the 1980s who ranks among the greats of the woman's game. Noted for her superb overhead strokes, she and her teammate, rival, and sometimes doubles partner Li Lingwei dominated international singles play for most of the decade, each winning the IBF World Championships twice, and led Chinese teams to victory in Uber Cup (women's world team) competitions. Amy Chan Lim Chee
Amy Chan MBE ( zh, j=, t=陳念慈; also known as Chan Lim-chee; born 27 June 1961) is a retired badminton player from Hong Kong who won gold medals in World Championships and Commonwealth Games. About Chan grew up with two brothers and a sister named Chen Aici in the East Block of North Point New Village on Hong Kong Island during her early years. Her father worked as a clerk. She completed her education at Ho Tung Government Industrial Girls' High School (now known as Ho Tung Middle School) in 1980, followed by enrollment at Luo Phu Quoc Education College, where she finished her physical education course in 1983. Shi Fangjing (, born 1965) is a former world level women's badminton player from China. Career A doubles specialist, Shi Fangjing won both women's doubles and mixed doubles at the Polish Open consecutively in 1985 and 1986, each with a different partner. Her biggest titles in badminton, however, all came with countryman Wang Pengren in mixed doubles. They were the surprise gold medalists at the 1987 IBF World Championships in Beijing, and subsequently captured the Badminton World Cup in both 1987 and 1988, the Swedish Open, World Badminton Grand Prix, the venerable All England Championships in 1988, and the French Open in 1989. Wang Pengren () is a male former world level badminton player from China. Career He specialized in mixed doubles, winning almost all of his significant international titles partnership with Shi Fangjing. Though they had previously won together at the Polish Open in 1985, Wang and Shi were unexpected mixed doubles victors at the 1987 World Championships in Beijing. Proving this achievement to be no fluke, they subsequently captured a number of top-tier events, including the Badminton World Cup (1987, 1988), the Swedish Open (1988), the All-England Championships (1988), the World Badminton Grand Prix (1988), and the French Open (1989). Park Joo-bong
Park Joo-bong (; born 5 December 1964) is a South Korean former badminton player who excelled from the early 1980s through the mid-1990s. He was a member of South Korean national team from 1981 to 1996. He won a gold medal in the men's doubles at the 1992 Olympics, three-times World mixed doubles champion, two-times World men's doubles champion, and a silver medal in the mixed doubles at the 1996 Olympics. Nettie Nielsen
Nettie Hyldborg Nielsen (born 23 July 1964) is a retired female badminton player from Denmark. European & Danish titles Nielsen won the gold medal at the 1988 and 1990 European Badminton Championships in women's doubles with Dorte Kjaer. She took a silver medal in the girls singles event at the European Junior Badminton Championships in 1981. Together with compatriot Dorte Kjaer she won the European juniors girls doubles title in 1981. In 1983 they became the Danish National ladies doubles champions for the first time. Dorte Kjær (born 6 February 1964) is a retired female badminton player from Denmark. European & Danish titles Kjær won the gold medal at the 1988 and 1990 European Badminton Championships in women's doubles with Nettie Nielsen. She and Nettie Nielsen had already won the European juniors girls doubles title in 1981. In 1983 they became the Danish National ladies doubles champions for the first time. Lin Ying (, or Lam Ying in Cantonese, born 1963) is a Chinese former badminton player and one of the most successful doubles specialists in the sport's modern history. During her 9-year career representing China's national badminton team, she won women's doubles at many world class tournaments and played on China's dominant Uber Cup teams of the 1980s.
