Bad Elster Spa Museum
The first Spa Museum (''Bademuseum'') in Bad Elster, Saxony was opened in 1880 due to the work of Prof. Dr. Robert Flechsig (1817–1892), Bernhard v. Heygendorff (1843–1916) and the Royal Saxony court photographer Emil Tietze (1840–1831). It soon closed. After World War 2, Dr. Bruno Rudau (1891–1970) and a few other Bad Elster citizens created a new museum which suffered the same fate. In 1993 it was created again under the title of the Saxon Spa Museum, Bad Elster, (''Sächsischen Bademuseum Bad Elster''). Bad Elster
Bad Elster () is a spa town in the Vogtlandkreis district, in Saxony, Germany. It lies on the border of Bavaria and the Czech Republic in the Elster gebirge hills. It is situated on the river White Elster, and is protected from extremes of temperature by the surrounding wooded hills. It is southeast of Plauen, and northwest of Cheb. It is part of the ''Freunde im Herzen Europas'' microregion. History Elster before 1800 Two kilometres north west of the town centre lies the remains of a twelfth-century walled village, known today as the "Alte Schloss" or "Old Castle". This was first documented in 1324. In 1412 a manor was sold to the von Zedtwitz family, who held it until 1800. In 1533 the Protestant Reformation, Reformation reached Adorf and its daughter church in Elster, and the first Protestant pastor was installed in 1540. Spa Town
A spa town is a resort town based on a mineral spa (a developed mineral spring). Patrons visit spas to "take the waters" for their purported health benefits. Thomas Guidott set up a medical practice in the English town of Bath, Somerset, Bath in 1668. He became interested in the curative properties of the hot mineral waters there and in 1676 wrote ''A discourse of Bathe, and the hot waters there. Also, Some Enquiries into the Nature of the water''. This brought the purported health-giving properties of the waters to the attention of the aristocracy, who started to partake in them soon after.
