Backflip (figure Skating)
A backflip is a move in figure skating. Terry Kubicka, a skater from the U.S., was the first skater to successfully execute a legal backflip at the Olympics, during the Figure skating at the 1976 Winter Olympics, 1976 Winter Olympics. The International Skating Union (ISU), the organization that oversees figure skating, banned the backflip in 1977 because it was deemed too dangerous and because it violated the principle of landing on one skate. Skaters continued to perform the move in ice shows and other non-competitive shows. Until 2024, the backflip was listed as an "illegal element/movement" on the official scoresheet used by judges during competition. 2024–25 Figure Skating Season
The 2024–25 figure skating season began on July 1, 2024, and will end on June 30, 2025. During this season, elite skaters will compete at the ISU Championship level at the 2025 European Championships, Four Continents Championships, World Junior Championships, and the World Championships. They also competed at elite events such as the ISU Challenger Series, the Grand Prix and Junior Grand Prix series, culminating at the Grand Prix Final. On June 15, 2023, the International Skating Union announced that all figure skaters and officials from Russia and Belarus would remain banned from attending any international competitions. Ottavio Cinquanta (15 August 1938 – 18 July 2022) was the president of the International Skating Union and a member of the International Olympic Committee. He held the ISU position from 1994 to 2016 and the IOC position since 1996. In 2000 he was elected member of the IOC's executive committee, a position that he held until 2008. Prior to becoming ISU's president, he was ISU's vice president and before that the chair of its technical committee for Short Track Speed Skating. Achilles Tendon Rupture
Achilles tendon rupture is when the Achilles tendon, at the back of the ankle, breaks. Symptoms include the sudden onset of sharp pain in the heel. A snapping sound may be heard as the tendon breaks and walking becomes difficult. Rupture of the Achilles tendon usually occurs due to a sudden, forceful push-off movement, an abrupt dorsiflexion of the foot while the calf muscle is engaged, or direct trauma. Chronic degeneration of the tendon, often from tendinosis, also increases the likelihood of rupture. Common risk factors include fluoroquinolone or corticosteroid use, sudden increases in physical activity, inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and chronic overuse or improper training. Midori Ito
is a retired Japanese figure skater. She is the 1989 World champion and the 1992 Olympic silver medalist. She is the first woman to land a triple Axel in competition. At the 1988 Calgary Olympics, she became the first woman to land seven triple jumps in an Olympic free skating competition. She is widely recognised as one of the best figure skaters of all time.
