Bachte-Maria-Leerne
Bachte-Maria-Leerne is a sub-municipality of Deinze in the Belgian province of East Flanders. It was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1977. The sub-municipality is located along the Lys (river), Lys river, the closed river branch Oude Leie and the Schipdonk Canal. Bachte-Maria-Leerne was founded in 1823 by merging the villages and parishes of and . In March 1919, the notorious stormed a farm in Bachte-Maria-Leerne. Deinze
Deinze () is a city and a municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders. It comprises the city of Deinze, and the towns of Astene, Bachte-Maria-Leerne, Gottem, Grammene, Hansbeke, Landegem, Meigem, Merendree, Nevele, Petegem-aan-de-Leie, , Sint-Martens-Leerne, Vinkt, Vosselare, Wontergem, and Zeveren. On 1 January 2022, Deinze had a population of 44,315. The municipality's total area is , giving a population density of 342 inhabitants per km2. On 1 January 2019, the municipality of Nevele was merged into Deinze. History In 1695, during the Nine Years' War, an English force garrisoned in the town under the command of the Irish general Francis Fergus O’Farrell was forced to surrender to French forces. Postal history The DEYNZE post office opened in 1836 with the postal code 31 (before 1864), then 94 prior to 1874. Lys (river)
The Lys () or Leie () is a river in France and Belgium, and a left-bank tributary of the Scheldt. Its source is in Pas-de-Calais, France, and it flows into the river Scheldt, with the confluence in the city of Ghent, Belgium. Its total length is . Historically a very polluted river from the high population density and industrialisation in both Northern France and Belgium, it has seen substantial improvements in recent years, partly due to the decline of the principal industry, the spinning and weaving of flax. The region of the Leie (between Deinze and Ghent) was known as a favourite place for numerous painters in the first half of the 20th century. The source of the Lys is in a village, Lisbourg, east of Fruges, in the Pas-de-Calais department of France. Schipdonk Canal
The Schipdonk Canal ( French: ''Canal de Schipdonk'' or ''Dérivation de la Lys''; Dutch: ''Schipdonkkanaal'' or ''Afleidingskanaal van de Leie'') is a canal in the Belgian provinces of East Flanders and West Flanders. With a length of , the canal runs in a northerly direction from Deinze, turning to a north-western direction roughly halfway along its route to the North Sea with which it meets on the coast near to Heist. It crosses both the Ghent-Bruges Canal and for its final runs parallel with the Leopold Canal as it approaches the north Belgian coast. History and profile In 1929, was published by for the first time. In 1939, the sports paper ''Sportwereld'' (established in 1912) was purchased by De Standaard and turned into a daily supplement to their two main newspapers, "" and "". In 1957, three other newspapers were purchased by and initially kept in circulation. In 1966, the further publication of two of them, ''Het Nieuws van de Dag'' and ''Het Vrije Volksblad'', was stopped. The same happened with the third paper, Het Handelsblad, in 1979.
