Baca Land Grants
The Baca land grants are five parcels of land, each almost 100,000 acres (40,000 ha, 400 km²) in area, located in New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. Each parcel is called a "float." They were created in 1860 by the U.S. government to compensate the Baca Family of New Mexico, Baca family for a ruling by the U.S. that invalidated the Hispanic family's ownership of a large area of land near Las Vegas, New Mexico. Tucumcari was founded in 1901, two years before Quay County was established.
