Babylon, New York
The Town of Babylon is one of ten towns in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Its population was 218,223 as of the 2020 census. Parts of Jones Beach Island, Captree Island and Fire Island are in the southernmost part of the town. It borders Nassau County to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. At its westernmost point, it is about from New York City at the Queens border, and about from Manhattan. The village of Babylon is also within the town. History The region was once called Huntington South. Nathaniel Conklin and Nathan Kowitt moved their families to the area, and around 1803 named it New Babylon, after the ancient city of Babylon. The town was officially formed in 1872 by a partition of the Town of Huntington. Babylon
Babylon ( ) was an ancient city located on the lower Euphrates river in southern Mesopotamia, within modern-day Hillah, Iraq, about south of modern-day Baghdad. Babylon functioned as the main cultural and political centre of the Akkadian-speaking region of Babylonia. North Babylon is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County, on the South Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 17,509 at the 2010 census. Overview North Babylon has a number of recreational areas such as Belmont Lake State Park where walking, cycling, picnicking and boating are enjoyed. Cedar Beach (Babylon, New York)
Cedar Beach is a public recreational beach of the Town of Babylon, in Suffolk County, New York. It is located on Jones Beach Island, a barrier island off of Long Island, between the populated places of Gilgo and Oak Beach. There are no residents. The beach is open to town residents and the general public during the summer season. During this time, lifeguards are on duty on weekdays, weekends, and holidays. There are also limited preseason hours beginning Memorial Day weekend. Access to the beach is via Ocean Parkway. Free parking is available for town residents with recreation permits. Non-residents and residents without permits may pay a daily fee to park ($20 Monday through Thursday; $40 Friday through Sunday and holidays). West Gilgo Beach, New York
West Gilgo Beach is a small private gated community located in the town of Babylon, in Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is part of the Gilgo census-designated place. History West Gilgo Beach was founded on Sept 18, 1939, by residents of High Hill Beach, who were displaced by the creation of Jones Beach State Park. About 60 of the original houses were moved by barge or the newly constructed road, from the Zachs Bay section of Jones Beach to the new community. Since then, the West Gilgo Beach Association has grown to approximately 80 houses. Prior to the 2010 census, the area was part of a larger CDP called Gilgo-Oak Beach-Captree. The Gilgo CDP contains several small beach communities on a barrier island along the southern edge of Long Island. Deer Park, New York
Deer Park is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Babylon, in Suffolk County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was listed as 28,837 at the time of the 2020 census. History Deer Park is located in the pine barrens in the northeastern corner of the town of Babylon. It grew out of Jacob Conklin's 1610 settlement of the Half Way Hollow Hills, later known as Wheatley Heights. Charles Wilson started what is now Deer Park in 1853 about eleven years after the Long Island Rail Road arrived in 1842-when he established a large and productive farm. A post office was opened in 1851, closed in 1872 and re-opened on July 1, 1873. Deer Park had an elementary school in 1874. Captree is a census-designated place (CDP) in the towns of Islip and Babylon in Suffolk County, New York, United States. It occupies Captree Island in Great South Bay, as well as the east end of Jones Beach Island to the south, comprising Captree State Park. It was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census. Prior to that it was part of the Oak Beach–Captree CDP. The community is in southwestern Suffolk County, on two islands that lie between Long Island to the north and Fire Island to the south. The eastern two-thirds of the CDP are in the town of Islip, while the one-third of the CDP that occupies the portion of Captree Island west of the Robert Moses Causeway is in the town of Babylon.
