Babine (film)
''Babine'' is a Canadian fantasy drama film, directed by Luc Picard and released in 2008. Adapted from Fred Pellerin's book ''Il faut prendre le taureau par les contes'', the film stars Vincent-Guillaume Otis as Babine, the village idiot of Saint-Élie-de-Caxton, Quebec. A lifelong outcast because his mother ( Isabel Richer) was believed to be the town witch, he becomes the immediate suspect when the town's church catches fire, killing the parish priest ( Julien Poulin). However, he will receive the support of the village's merchant, Toussaint Brodeur (Luc Picard), as he attempts to prove his innocence. The film's cast also includes Alexis Martin, Gildor Roy, Marie Brassard and Antoine Bertrand. A sequel film, '' Ésimésac'', was released in 2012. Luc Picard
Luc Picard (born 24 September 1961) is a French Canadian actor, director and comedian. Early life and education Picard was born on 24 September 1961, in Lachine, Quebec, Canada. He trained at the Conservatoire d'art dramatique de Montréal, and quickly became a favourite with Quebec audiences with his frequent appearances on television. Career During the 1990s, following his debut performance in '' Letters of Transit (Les Sauf-conduits)'' he slowly developed as a film star with character roles in a variety of films, especially those by Pierre Falardeau. The Genie Awards were given out annually by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television to recognize the best of Canadian cinema from 1980–2012. They succeeded the Canadian Film Awards (1949–1978), known as the "Etrog Awards" for sculptor Sorel Etrog, who designed its statuette. Genie Award candidates were selected from submissions made by the owners of Canadian films or their representatives, based on the criteria laid out in the ''Genie Rules and Regulations'' booklet which were distributed to Academy members and industry members. Peer-group juries, assembled from volunteer members of the Academy, met to watch the submissions and select a group of nominees. Academy members then voted on these nominations. In 2012, the Academy announced that the Genies would merge with its sister presentation for television, the Gemini Awards, to form a new award presentation, the Canadian Screen Awards. The Directors Guild of Canada (DGC; ) is a Canadian labour union representing more than 5,500 professionals from 48 different occupations in the Canadian film and television industry. Founded in 1962, the DGC represents directors, editors, assistant directors, location managers, production assistants and others. Rotten Tomatoes is an American review aggregator, review-aggregation website for film and television.
