BMW R45
BMW extended its range of horizontally opposed twins in the late 1970s with the introduction of the R45. Looking very much like scaled down versions of BMW's larger models, the R45 featured sharper and modern styling while both weight and overall dimensions were reduced. The Type 247 Engine was used with smaller Poppet valve#Internal combustion engine, pistons, carburetors and a different final drive to assist acceleration. For the German market, the 473cc R45 came with a reduced power output of 27 BHP (@to qualify for favorable insurance) while versions sold elsewhere had 35 BHP on tap. The R45 was primarily targeted at learner drivers and some 28,000 of these were produced. Tested by Bike magazine in 1979, the R45 recorded a top speed of while returning an overall fuel consumption of 56.2mpg (5.0litres/100 km). Poppet Valve
A poppet valve (also called mushroom valve) is a valve typically used to control the timing and quantity of gas or vapor flow into an engine. It consists of a hole or open-ended chamber, usually round or oval in cross-section, and a plug, usually a disk shape on the end of a shaft known as a valve stem. The working end of this plug, the valve face, is typically ground at a 45° bevel to seal against a corresponding valve seat ground into the rim of the chamber being sealed. The shaft travels through a valve guide to maintain its alignment. A pressure differential on either side of the valve can assist or impair its performance. In exhaust applications higher pressure against the valve helps to seal it, and in intake applications lower pressure helps open it. The poppet valve was invented in 1833 by American E.A.G. Carburetor
A carburetor (also spelled carburettor) is a device used by an internal combustion engine to control and mix air and fuel entering the engine. The primary method of adding fuel to the intake air is through the venturi tube in the main metering circuit, however various other components are also used to provide extra fuel or air in specific circumstances. Since the 1990s, carburetors have been largely replaced by fuel injection for cars and trucks, however carburetors are still used by some small engines (e.g. lawnmowers, generators and concrete mixers) and motorcycles. Diesel engines have always used fuel injection instead of carburetors.
