BMW B48
The BMW B48 is a turbocharged inline-four petrol engine which replaced the BMW N20 and has been in production since 2014. It was first used in the F56 Mini Hatch and has been used in BMW applications since 2015. The B48 is part of a modular BMW engine family of 3-cylinder ( B38/ B37), 4-cylinder (B48/ B47) and 6-cylinder ( B58/ B57) engines, which use a displacement of per cylinder. A SULEV version of the BMW B48, the B46, is sold in the United States and other regions with strict emissions standards. Outside of minor differences, primarily with emissions control hardware, the two lines of engines are essentially identical and feature similar performance and reliability. Design Compared with its N20 predecessor, the B48 uses a more undersquare design, and an engine block using "closed-deck construction". As with the N20, the block and head are made from aluminium Aluminium (or aluminum in North American English) is a chemical element; it has chemical symbol, ...

BMW N20
The BMW N20 is a turbocharged four-cylinder DOHC petrol engine with variable valve lift and variable valve timing which replaced the N53 (or BMW N52 in some markets) and was produced from 2011 to 2017 by BMW. Although the N20 is a four-cylinder engine, it is considered a replacement for the naturally aspirated six-cylinder N52/N53 because it powers equivalent models, producing similar horsepower to the N52/N53 with greater low-rpm torque and better efficiency. The N20 features a twin-scroll turbocharger, double-VANOS (variable valve timing), Valvetronic (variable valve lift), direct injection, automatic stop-start and an electric water pump. The N20 was sold alongside the smaller displacement BMW N13 turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The N20 was placed in ''Wards Top 10 Engines'' in 2012. In 2014, the N20 began to be replaced by its successor, the BMW B48. Class action lawsuit alleging timing chain guide failures It has been well documented in online forums, that thous ...

Inline-four Engine
A straight-four engine (also referred to as an inline-four engine) is a four-cylinder piston engine where cylinders are arranged in a line along a common crankshaft. The majority of automotive four-cylinder engines use a straight-four layout (with the exceptions of the flat-four engines produced by Subaru and Porsche) and the layout is also very common in motorcycles and other machinery. Therefore the term "four-cylinder engine" is usually synonymous with straight-four engines. When a straight-four engine is installed at an inclined angle (instead of with the cylinders oriented vertically), it is sometimes called a slant-four. Between 2005 and 2008, the proportion of new vehicles sold in the United States with four-cylinder engines rose from 30% to 47%. By the 2020 model year, the share for light-duty vehicles had risen to 59%. Design A four-stroke straight-four engine always has a cylinder on its power stroke, unlike engines with fewer cylinders where there is no power st ...

VANOS
VANOS is a variable valve timing system used by BMW on various automotive petrol engines since 1992. The name is an abbreviation of the German words for ''variable camshaft timing'' (). The initial version (retrospectively renamed "single VANOS") was solely used on the intake camshaft, while the later "double VANOS" systems are used on intake and exhaust camshafts. Since 2001, VANOS is often used in conjunction with the Valvetronic variable valve lift system. Operation VANOS is a variator system that varies the timing of the valves by moving the position and the camshafts in relation to the drive gear. The relative timing between inlet and exhaust valves is changed. At lower engine speeds, the position of the camshaft is moved so the valves are opened later, as this improves idling quality and smooth power development. As the engine speed increases, the valves are opened earlier: this enhances torque, reduces fuel consumption and lowers emissions. At high engine speeds, the ...

Valvetronic
The Valvetronic system is a BMW variable valve lift system which, in combination with VANOS, allows infinite adjustment of both intake valve timing and lift. The system claims to improve fuel economy and emissions, and negates the need for a throttle body in regular use. First introduced by BMW on the 316ti compact in 2001, Valvetronic has since been added to many of BMW's engines. Details Unlike a traditional engine where the camshaft acts onto a rocker arm that actuates the valves, an engine with Valvetronic has an intermediate arm between the rocker and the camshaft, which allows the valve lift to be varied depending on the position of an eccentric shaft adjacent to the intermediate arm. The eccentric shaft, whose position is controlled by the DME using an electric motor, rotates through a range of 225 degrees to push the intermediate arm towards, or away from, the camshaft. For lesser lift, the eccentric shaft moves the intermediate arm away from the camshaft, so th ...

Fuel Injection
Fuel injection is the introduction of fuel in an internal combustion engine, most commonly automotive engines, by the means of a fuel injector. This article focuses on fuel injection in reciprocating piston and Wankel rotary engines. All compression-ignition engines (e.g. diesel engines), and many spark-ignition engines (i.e. petrol (gasoline) engines, such as Otto or Wankel), use fuel injection of one kind or another. Mass-produced diesel engines for passenger cars (such as the Mercedes-Benz OM 138) became available in the late 1930s and early 1940s, being the first fuel-injected engines for passenger car use. In passenger car petrol engines, fuel injection was introduced in the early 1950s and gradually gained prevalence until it had largely replaced carburetors by the early 1990s. The primary difference between carburetion and fuel injection is that fuel injection atomizes the fuel through a small nozzle under high pressure, while carburetion relies on suction crea ...

Aluminium
Aluminium (or aluminum in North American English) is a chemical element; it has chemical symbol, symbol Al and atomic number 13. It has a density lower than that of other common metals, about one-third that of steel. Aluminium has a great affinity towards oxygen, passivation (chemistry), forming a protective layer of aluminium oxide, oxide on the surface when exposed to air. It visually resembles silver, both in its color and in its great ability to reflect light. It is soft, magnetism, nonmagnetic, and ductility, ductile. It has one stable isotope, 27Al, which is highly abundant, making aluminium the abundance of the chemical elements, 12th-most abundant element in the universe. The radioactive decay, radioactivity of aluminium-26, 26Al leads to it being used in radiometric dating. Chemically, aluminium is a post-transition metal in the boron group; as is common for the group, aluminium forms compounds primarily in the +3 oxidation state. The aluminium cation Al3+ ...

Undersquare
Stroke ratio, today universally defined as bore/stroke ratio, is a term to describe the ratio between cylinder bore diameter and piston stroke length in a reciprocating piston engine. This can be used for either an internal combustion engine, where the fuel is burned within the cylinders of the engine, or external combustion engine, such as a steam engine, where the combustion of the fuel takes place ''outside'' the working cylinders of the engine. Conventions The contemporary convention for describing the ''stroke ratio'' of a piston engine‘s cylinders is its ''bore/stroke'' ratio. ''Stroke/bore'' ratio is an obsolete expression dating to the early era of reciprocating engine development. Bore/stroke ratio The diameter of the cylinder bore is divided by the length of the piston stroke to give the ratio. Square, oversquare and undersquare engines The following terms describe the naming conventions for the configurations of the various bore/stroke ratio: Square A square ...

SULEV
Super ultra-low emissions vehicle (SULEV) is a U.S. classification for passenger vehicle emissions. The classification is based on producing 90% fewer emissions than the average gasoline-powered vehicle. The SULEV standard is stricter than the standard for LEV (low emission vehicle) and ULEV ( ultra-low-emission vehicle), however not as strict as PZEV ( partial zero-emissions vehicle) which meets the SULEV standard for tailpipe emissions, but has zero instead of reduced evaporative emissions. Japan also offers an SU-LEV classification, for vehicles that show a 75 percent reduction in emissions vis-à-vis the 2005 emissions standards. Examples Examples of vehicles delivering SULEV emissions performance include: * Honda Accord 2000- * Honda Insight (CVT transmission models only) * Honda Civic Hybrid CVT transmission models only, AT-PZEV available in certain states * Honda Civic GX Natural Gas * Honda CR-Z (AT-PZEV) * Toyota Prius * Ford Focus SULEV * BMW SULEV 230i, i3 REx, ...
