Ilham Aliyev
Ilham Heydar Oghlu Aliyev (born 24 December 1961) is an Azerbaijani politician who has been the fourth president of Azerbaijan since 2003. He is also the leader of the New Azerbaijan Party since 2005. The son and second child of former Azerbaijani president Heydar Aliyev, Aliyev became the country's president on 31 October 2003 after a two-month term as the prime minister of Azerbaijan, through a presidential election defined by irregularities shortly before his father's death. In this article, the history of Azerbaijan is understood as the history of the region now forming the Republic of Azerbaijan. Topographically, the land is contained by the southern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains in the north, the Caspian Sea in the east, and the Armenian Highlands in the west. In the south, its natural boundaries are less distinct, and here the country merges with the Iranian Plateau. The entity of Caucasian Albania was established on its soil in ancient times. Religion In Azerbaijan
Islam is the majority religion in Azerbaijan, but the country used to be considered to be the most secular in the Muslim world. Estimates include 90% (The World Factbook, 2020) and 99.2% (Pew Research Center, 2006) of the population identifying as Muslim, a majority belong to the Shia branch (55-65%), while a significant minority (35%-45%) are Sunni. Traditionally, the differences between these two branches of Islam have not been sharply defined in Azerbaijan.
