Azzam Al-Gharib
Azzam al-Gharib () is a Syrian politician and former military commander. He was appointed Governor of Aleppo Governorate on 21 December 2024 by Syria's transitional leadership, following the fall of the Assad regime. Early life and education Al-Gharib was born in 1985 in Saraqib, a town in the Idlib Governorate northwest of Syria. He later moved to Aleppo, where he completed a degree in dentistry at Aleppo University in 2006. He was arrested multiple times by the Assad regime between 2003 and 2006, spending time in the notorious Far' Falastin and Air Force Intelligence Directorate detention centers. His political activities and opposition to the regime made him a target, leading to his eventual involvement in the armed opposition. Far' Falastin
Far' Falastine (), also known as Branch 235, is a prison operated by Syrian Intelligence under the charge of Brig. Gen. Muhammad Khallouf located in Damascus, notorious for accounts of torture, coercive interrogation, and deplorable conditions related by its former detainees. The Branch was established in 1969 as the liaison between the Syrian government and the various Palestinian entities permitted to operate in Syria (Fatah, as-Sa'iqa, DFLP, and PFLP). Although it has been associated with torture at least since 1990, the prison gained widespread notoriety in the wake of the September 11 attacks due to detainees suspected of ties to terrorist organizations being sent there through extraordinary renditions, primarily by the United States, as a means of outsourcing torture. The Islamic Front ( ar, الجبهة الإسلامية, ''al-Jabhat al-Islāmiyyah'') was a Sunni Islamist rebel group involved in the Syrian Civil War, which was formed by the union of seven separate groups on 22 November 2013. Its three largest components were Ahrar ash-Sham, the al-Tawhid Brigade and Jaysh al-Islam. The alliance was achieved by expanding the preceding Syrian Islamic Front alliance. The Air Force Intelligence Directorate ( ar, إدارة المخابرات الجوية, ''Idarat al-Mukhabarat al-Jawiyya'') is an intelligence service of Syria, possibly the country's most powerful, owing its importance to Hafez al-Assad's role as the Air Force commander.
