Azharul Islam Sheikh
Azharul Islam Sheikh Chanchal is a Bangladeshi academic and the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Dhaka. He is a professor of the department of ceramics at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Dhaka. Early life Sheikh completed his PhD at the University of Rajshahi. Career Sheikh participated in the 11th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh in January 2004, held at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. Sheikh, as a newly recruited teacher at the Institute of Fine Arts, was among four faculty members who, alongside Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chatradal activists, attacked protesting students at the Institute of Fine Arts in June 2005. Armed with bamboo sticks, Azharul and his colleagues physically assaulted students, including slapping and punching female protesters. The attack, aimed at dispersing demonstrations against the vice chancellor and proctor, resulted in severe injuries, with some students reportedly missing. The Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA) is a faculty of the University of Dhaka. It was established in 1948 as the Dhaka Art School. It was the first art school in the region and became the main centre of art and cultural practice. Since 1956 it has been situated in Shahbag, Dhaka, close to the Bangladesh National Museum. Architect Muzharul Islam designed the building. In 2008, the institute took its current name when it became one of the faculties of the University of Dhaka. Influence on art After the institute was established, within a few years, however, it became quite apparent that what was started only as a training centre had assumed a far greater role, for it quickly became a meeting place for all aspiring artists and a forum from which a new art movement could be launched. Nisar Hossain
Nisar Hossain is a Bangladeshi academic and the former Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka. It was during his tenure that the Mangal Shobhajatra, the celebration of Pohela Baishakh organised by the Faculty of Fine Arts, was recognised as an UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. Early life Hossain was born in 1961 in Dhaka, East Pakistan, Pakistan. He obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1981 from the Department of Drawing and Painting at the University of Dhaka. He later earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1985 from the Department of Painting at Visva-Bharati University. Abu Sayed (student Activist)
Abu Sayed (; – 16 July 2024) was a Bangladeshi student activist who was shot dead by the police on 16 July 2024, while participating in the 2024 quota reform movement. Sayed was a student of Begum Rokeya University and was involved in the protest in front of the university when the police engaged in lathi charges and opened fire on the students. Early life Abu Sayed grew up in Babanpur village of Pirganj Upazila of Rangpur (then part of Rajshahi Division). His father is Maqbul Hossain and his mother is Monowara Begum. Mangal Shobhajatra, officially titled as Barshabaran Ananda Shobhajatra, is a mass procession that takes place at dawn on the first day of the Bengali New Year in Bangladesh. The procession is organised by the teachers and students of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Dhaka. The festival is considered an expression of the secular identity of the Bangladeshi people and as a way to promote unity.
