Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra
The Hajibeyov Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra (Azerbaijani language, Azeri: ''Hacıbəyov adına Azərbaycan Dövlət Simfonik Orkestri'') was formed in 1920 being one of the first orchestras in the Soviet Union, at the request of composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov after whom it was later named. It is affiliated with the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic Society. Composers such as Rhené-Baton and Otto Klemperer were invited from abroad to assist in establishing and training the orchestra body. From 1938 to 1984, Hajibeyov's nephew Niyazi was conducting the orchestra. After his death, the conducting has been performed by People's Artist of Azerbaijan, Professor Rauf Abdullayev. The orchestra has toured a number of countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Turkey, and Egypt. Mugham Festival
The Mugam Festival or Shusha Festival is an annual cultural and musical festival held in Shaki, Azerbaijan. The festival features traditional Azerbaijani music known as mugam. Pioneers One of the major pioneers of this festival was Uzeyir Hajibeyov who was a People's Artist of the USSR in 1938. Hajibeyov dedicated his life to preserve the traditional music of Azerbaijan. Another pioneer was Rashid Behbudov, also the winner of People's Artist of the USSR, who participated in every festival. The Mugham Festival was founded and is traditionally celebrated in the Azerbaijani city of Shusha. The last Mugham Festival in Shusha took place in 1988. Because of the conflict in the Karabakh region, Shusha has been occupied by Armenian forces since 1992 and all Azeris have fled the city. Niyazi Hajibeyov
Niyazi Zulfugar oghlu Taghizade Hajibeyov (; 20 August 1912 – 2 August 1984) was a Soviet and Azerbaijani conductor and composer. People's Artist of the USSR (1959) and Hero of Socialist Labour (1982). Early life Niyazi was born on August 20, 1912, in Tbilisi in a family of prominent Shusha musicians. His father was the composer Zulfugar Hajibeyov. He is the nephew of Uzeyir Hajibeyov, the founder of the Azeri classical music. He played the violin in "Qırmızı Kadet" Turkish military orchestra in 1921. He studied at the Gnessin Music School in Moscow in 1925-1926. In 1929-30 he studied at the Central Musical Technical School in Leningrad, but dropped out due to health problems. He returned to Baku in 1931. Right after that, he was sent to Dagestan where he met his future wife Həchər khanum. Hecher Khanum's family would not approve of the marriage.
