Aya Kamikawa
is a Tokyo municipal official. With her election in April 2003, she became the first openly transgender person to seek or win elected office in Japan. Life Aya Kamikawa was born on January 25, 1968, in Tokyo's Taitō Ward. She is the second child of three. She attended Hosei University Second Senior High School, an all-boys school. In 1990, Kamikawa graduated from Hosei University with a degree in Business Administration. She began to work in the field of public relations whilst presenting masculine. In 1995, she resigned from her post, citing stress associated with gender dysphoria, and began hormone replacement therapy. In 1998, she was diagnosed with gender identity disorder by a psychiatrist. In 1999, she started working at a private company whilst presenting feminine. She also changed her name to Aya that same year. Taitō
is a special ward in the Tokyo Metropolis in Japan. In English, it is known as Taitō City. As of May 1, 2015, the ward has an estimated population of 186,276, and a population density of 18,420 persons per km2. The total area is . Ayako Fuchigami
is a member of the Hokkaido Legislative Assembly, representing Sapporo's Higashi-ku ward. She is the first openly trans person to hold a prefectural assembly position in Japan. Life Fuchigami was born in Ogi, Saga Prefecture, on 16 January 1975. The LGBTQ community in Tokyo is one of the largest in LGBT rights in Asia, Asia. While Japan does not assign as much moral or social weight to sexuality as in the West, it is still difficult for Japanese people to come out in society as being LGBT; the community reportedly experiences homophobia even amongst those in the community.
