Axworthy (horse)
Axworthy (1892–1917) was an American Standardbred horse. A descendant of Hambletonian 10, he is considered one of the most important sires in the development of the modern Standardbred breed. History Axworthy created a bloodline in the making of the American Standardbred through the Hambletonian 10 offspring George Wilkes. Axworthy was bred by A B Darling, New York at the stud at Terre Haute, Indiana at the stock farm of W P Ijams. He was developed first by Budd Doble at Terra Haute and when three-years-old by John Young, Kentucky. In 1896 Axworthy was bought by John H Shults, Brooklyn, New York at an auction in Madison Square Garden, New York. From there he was sent to Parkville Farms. Ones more in the sale ring 1906 he was sold to William Simpson and sent to Lexington, Kentucky. Axworthy was a tall studhorse of impressive conformation, with a grand slashing stroke. Standardbred
The Standardbred is an American horse breed best known for its ability in harness racing, where members of the breed compete at either a trot or pace. Developed in North America, the Standardbred is recognized worldwide, and the breed can trace its bloodlines to 18th-century England. They are solid, well-built horses with good dispositions. In addition to harness racing, the Standardbred is used for a variety of equestrian activities, including horse shows and pleasure riding, particularly in the Midwestern and Eastern United States and in Southern Ontario. History In the 17th century, the first trotting races were held in the Americas, usually in fields on horses under saddle. Hambletonian 10
Hambletonian 10, or Rysdyk's Hambletonian, (May 5, 1849 – March 27, 1876) was an American trotter and a founding sire of the Standardbred horse breed. The stallion was born in Sugar Loaf, New York, on 5 May 1849. Hambletonian has been inducted into the Immortals category of the Harness Racing Hall of Fame. Origin and early years Hambletonian 10 was bred by Jonas Seely, Jr., on his farm at Sugar Loaf in Orange County, New York. He was sired by Abdallah, a grandson of the hugely influential Thoroughbred sire, Messenger. Abdallah was ugly in body and temperament, so much so that he was sold to a fish peddler for $5. Hambletonian's dam was known as the Charles Kent mare or the "Kent Mare", sired by Bellfounder (GB), an imported Norfolk Trotter. The University Press of Kentucky (UPK) is the scholarly publisher for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and was organized in 1969 as successor to the University of Kentucky Press. The university had sponsored scholarly publication since 1943. In 1949, the press was established as a separate academic agency under the university president, and the following year Bruce F. Denbo, then of Louisiana State University Press, was appointed as the first full-time professional director. Denbo served as director of UPK until his retirement in 1978, building a small but distinguished list of scholarly books with emphasis on American history and literary criticism. Since its reorganization, the Press has represented a consortium that now includes all of Kentucky's state universities, seven of its private colleges, and two historical societies.
