Avra, Trikala
Avra () is a village in Kalabaka municipality, Trikala, Thessaly, Greece. History The community of Koprainis was established on August 16, 1912, when the settlement of Kopraina (Κόπραινα) was split off from the municipality of Aigini (Δήμος Αιγινίου) and designated as the seat of the community. On October 10, 1955, Kopraina was renamed Avra. It was merged into the municipality of Kalampaka on December 4, 1997. Geography Avra is located approximately 12 km east of the town center of Kalabaka and 22 km from Trikala. Agriculture is the main economic activity, along with tourism. Attractions The Monastery of Saint George at Avra () is located in the hills to the northwest of the town center. Trikala () is one of the regional units of Greece, forming the northwestern part of the modern regions of Greece, region of Thessaly. Its capital is the city of Trikala. Kalabaka
Kalabaka (, ''Kalabáka'', alternative transliterations are ''Kalambaka'' and ''Kalampaka'') is a town and seat of the municipality of Meteora (municipality), Meteora in the Trikala (regional unit), Trikala regional unit, part of Thessaly in Greece. The population was 11,492 at the 2021 census, of which 8,573 in the town proper. The Meteora monasteries are located near the town. Kalabaka is the northwestern terminal of the old Thessaly Railways, now part of Hellenic Railways Organisation, OSE. History A Greek inscription on the wall of one of the town's oldest churches (Saint John the Baptist) testifies to the existence of an ancient Greek settlement under the name Aiginion. Trikala () is a city in northwestern Thessaly, Greece, and the capital of the Trikala (regional unit), Trikala regional unit. The city straddles the Lithaios river, which is a tributary of Pineios (Thessaly), Pineios. Cosmas Of Aetolia
Kosmas the Aetolian, sometimes Cosmas the Aetolian or Patrokosmas "Father Kosmas" (, ''Kosmas Etolos''; born between 1700 and 1714 – died 1779), was a monk in the Greek Orthodox Church. He is recognized as one of the originators of the twentieth-century religious movements in Greece. He is also noted for his prophesies. Saint Kosmas, the "Equal to the Apostles," was officially proclaimed a Saint by the Orthodox Church of Constantinople on 20 April 1961 under the tenure of Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras. His feast day is celebrated on 24 August, the date of his martyrdom. Life Kosmas was born in the Greek village of Mega Dendron near the town of Thermo in the region of Aetolia. He studied Greek and theology before becoming a monk after a trip to Mount Athos, where he also attended the local Theological Academy. After two years Kosmas left Athos.
