Avenida Marginal (Mindelo)
Avenida Marginal is an important street in Mindelo, São Vicente island, Cape Verde. It runs along the coast of the Porto Grande Bay, connecting the city centre with the northwestern outskirts (Matiota). Its southern end is the intersection with Rua Libertadores de África (the former ''Rua Lisboa'') and Rua da Praia, that continues south along the coast. Avenida Marginal runs along the port of Mindelo, below Fortim d'El-Rei and along ''Praia da Laginha'' in Matiota. Porto Grande Bay
Porto Grande Bay ( pt, Baía do Porto Grande), also Mindelo Bay, is a bay on the north coast of the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde. The main city of São Vicente, Mindelo, is situated at the bay. The Porto Grande Bay is a natural harbour. It stretches between the headlands Ponta João Ribeiro in the northeast and Ponta do Morro Branco in the west. To the northwest it opens towards the Canal de São Vicente, the channel between the islands São Vicente and Santo Antão. The small rocky islet Ilhéu dos Pássaros lies north of the bay. Port facilities The port is owned and operated by ENAPOR, the Cape Verdean port authority. António Aurélio Gonçalves
António Aurélio Gonçalves, better known as Nhô Roque (25 September 1901 – 30 September 1984), was a Cape Verdean writer, critic, historian and professor. Life Gonçalves was born in the city of Mindelo, capital of the island of São Vicente. He was the son of Roque da Silva Gonçalves. He was absent from the island for 22 years after he headed to the imperial capital of Lisbon in 1917 after his high-school studies at the seminary on the island of São Nicolau. He attended the University of Lisbon where he studied medicine for two years. Later, he studied Fine Arts, history and philosophy. In 1938, he published a dissertation on irony in the work by Eça de Queiroz. He returned to his native island in early 1939. Bana (singer)
Adriano Gonçalves (5 March 1932 – 13 July 2013), known by his stage name Bana and called the " King of Morna", was a Cape Verdean singer and performer of the morna style, the plaintive, melodic lament which is a staple musical style of the country. Biography He was born in Mindelo on 5 March 1932, some sources said he was born on 11 March. In his childhood years, he was surrounded by music with local singers. At age four, he appeared with local singers. Bana, who was over seven feet tall, began his musical career during Portuguese colonial rule, when he worked as a handyman and bodyguard for the legendary Cabo Verdean composer and performer, B. Leza. In the 1950s, the singer, uncle of Cesária Évora taught Bana and many other artists the art of morna songs. Cesária Évora
Cesária Évora GCIH (; 27 August 194117 December 2011), more commonly known as Cize, was a Cape Verdean singer-songwriter. She received a Grammy Award in 2004 for her album '' Voz d'Amor''. Nicknamed the "Barefoot Diva" for performing without shoes, she was known as the "Queen of Morna". Évora began singing as a young woman in bars in her hometown of Mindelo, and came to international prominence in the 1990s.
