Autechre ( ) are an English electronic music duo consisting of Rob Brown and Sean Booth, both from Rochdale, Greater Manchester. Formed in 1987, they are among the best known acts signed to UK electronic label Warp Records, through which all of Autechre's full-length albums have been released beginning with their 1993 debut '' Incunabula''. They gained initial recognition when they were featured on Warp's 1992 compilation ''Artificial Intelligence''. Nothing Records
Nothing Records was an American record label specializing in industrial rock and electronic music, founded by John Malm Jr. and Trent Reznor in 1992. It is considered an example of a vanity label, where an artist is able to run a label with some small degree of independence within a larger parent company, in this case the larger company being Interscope Records. Nothing Records went largely defunct in 2004, after a lawsuit by Reznor against John Malm. The label became inactive as a whole following several further releases; 2007's '' Beside You in Time'' music video was the label's final release. Background Nothing Records is most famous for its two original signings, Trent Reznor's own band Nine Inch Nails, and Marilyn Manson. Incunabula (album)
''Incunabula'' is the debut studio album by English electronic music duo Autechre, released by UK label Warp on 29 November 1993, and again by Wax Trax! on 25 January 1994 in the United States. ''Incunabula'' became a surprise success, reaching the top of the UK Indie Chart. In 2012, UK magazine ''Fact'' named it the 11th best album of the 1990s. It was re-released on vinyl by Warp on 11 November 2016. Production Autechre member Rob Brown stated that ''Incunabula'' was "more of a compilation of old material" and that he believed follow-up album ''Amber'' was the "first album we put out on Warp." Music critics David Stubbs and Ned Raggett noted that ''Incunabula'' would differ from Autechre's later releases. Gescom is an electronic music project based in the UK with close ties to the electronic duo Autechre. Warp Records
Warp Records is a British independent record label that specialises in Electronic music, electronic, indie rock and experimental music. It was founded in Sheffield in 1989 by Steve Beckett, Robert Mitchell and Robert Gordon. It has released records by acts including Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Squarepusher, Brian Eno, Broadcast (band), Broadcast, Flying Lotus, Maxïmo Park, !!!, Battles (band), Battles and Grizzly Bear (band), Grizzly Bear. Warp began as a record shop in 1987, and released its first record, "Track With No Name" by Gordon's band Forgemasters (band), Forgemasters, in 1989. Skam Records
Skam Records is an independent electronic music record label based in Manchester, England, founded by Andy Maddocks around 1990. Skam also runs a smaller sub-label called 33. History Skam's first 12-inch single was '' Lego Feet'' by Lego Feet (Sean Booth and Rob Brown, later known as Autechre). The label followed with two 12" records from Gescom, a project whose members vary between each release. Other early Skam releases came from Freeform (Simon Pyke), Bola, Jega, Team Doyobi, Wevie Stonder, E.Stonji (Jens Döring), and Boards of Canada. Casio SK-1
The Casio SK-1 is a small sampling keyboard made by Casio in 1985. It has 32 small sized piano keys, four-note polyphony, with a sampling bit depth of 8 bit PCM and a sample rate of 9.38 kHz for 1.4 seconds, a built-in microphone and line level and microphone inputs for sampling, and an internal speaker and line out. It also features a small number of four-note polyphonic preset analog and digital instrument voices, and a simple additive voice. All voices may be shaped by 13 preset envelopes, portamento, and vibrato. It also includes a rudimentary sequence recorder, preset rhythms and chord accompaniment. The SK-1 was thus an unusually full-featured synth in the sub-US$100 (equivalent to $ today) home keyboard market of the time. ''Artificial Intelligence'' is a compilation album released via Warp on 6 July 1992. It is the first release in Warp's ''Artificial Intelligence'' series. The album helped birth the genre that would later become known as intelligent dance music (IDM). Glitch is a genre of experimental electronic music that emerged in the 1990s, which is distinguished by the deliberate use of glitches in audio media and other sonic artifacts. The sounds featured in glitch tracks usually come from audio recording device or digital electronics malfunctions, such as CD skipping, electric hum, digital or analog distortion, circuit bending, bit-rate reduction, hardware noise, software bugs, computer crashes, vinyl record hiss or scratches, and system errors, as well as abstract sound design produced from the intended use of these technologies.
