The Australian Society of Archivists is a professional organization of archivists in Australia. The Australian Library Association had an archives section between 1951 and 1973. Significant persons in the starting of the society include Phyllis Mander-Jones, and Robert Sharman who became the editor of the journal ''Archives and Manuscripts'' The inaugural meeting of the Society was held at the Australian National University in April 1975. The first biennial conference was held in 1977. An archivist is an information professional who assesses, collects, organizes, preserves, maintains control over, and provides access to records and archives determined to have long-term value. Australian Library And Information Association
The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), formerly the Australian Institute of Librarians and Library Association of Australia, is the peak professional organisation for the Australian library and information services sector. Founded in 1937, its headquarters are in Canberra. Phyllis Mander-Jones
Phyllis Mander-Jones (2 January 1896 – 19 February 1984) was an Australian born librarian and archivist who helped establish the archival profession in Australia. Early life Phyllis Mander-Jones was born in Homebush, Sydney, Australia, the eldest child of physician George Mander Jones and his wife Margaret Fleming (née Arnott). Both parents had commercial connections: George was the grandson of retailer David Jones, whilst Margaret was the daughter of Australia's leading biscuit manufacturer, William Arnott. The young Mander-Jones family had two stints in England between 1899 and 1906, before settling in the Sydney suburb of Wahroonga. She and her sister Mildred were educated at nearby Abbotsleigh a private girls' school, while her three brothers: Evan, Burnett and Geoffrey went to Shore School. Loris Elaine Williams
Loris Elaine Williams (1949–2005) was an Australian archivist and activist who supported the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and used archives to help promote family, country and Indigenous identity. She became the first Aboriginal person from Queensland to earn professional archival qualifications and was only the second Aboriginal person to do that. Biography Loris Williams was born on 16 September 1949 into a strong Aboriginal family in Brisbane. Her mother Agnes (née Bell) descended from the Birri Gubba people of the country's North Queensland region. Her father Cyril was from the Mununjali people who hailed from Beaudesert, south of Brisbane. Anne-Marie Lucienne Schwirtlich , is an Australian librarian who was the Director-General of the National Library of Australia from 2011 to 2017. In 2015, she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).
