The Australian Mutual Provident Society Building is a heritage-listed office building at 416-418 Flinders Street, Townsville CBD, City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Hall and Cook and built from 1937 to 1938 by Stuart Brothers. It is also known as the former AMP Building and Connolly Suthers Lawyers. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 1 August 2005. History The Australian Mutual Provident Society building (AMP Society), located on the corner of Flinders and Stanley Streets, Townsville, was completed in 1938. It was the second building in Townsville to be purpose-designed for the AMP as its North Queensland regional office. The Australian Mutual Provident Society was formed in 1849 to provide facilities for life assurance on the mutual principle for people in New South Wales. Francis Richard Hall (9 February 1862 – 18 March 1939) was an architect in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Many of his works are listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. Early life Francis Hall was born on 9 February 1862 in Brisbane, the son of architect John Richard Hall and his wife Philadelphia (née Starr). He attended school in Brisbane and Maryborough before winning a scholarship in 1875 to attend Brisbane Grammar School. His half-brother, Thomas Ramsay Hall also trained as an architect. Career He commenced his architectural career in 1896 when he joined his father's practice which was then renamed Hall & Son. After his father's death in 1883, he became head of the practice. Sir John Sulman (29 August 1849 – 18 August 1934) was an Australian architect. Born in Greenwich, England, he emigrated to Sydney in 1885. From 1921 to 1924 he was chairman of the Federal Capital Advisory Committee and influenced the development of Canberra. Early life Born in Greenwich, England, Sulman was educated at the Greenwich Proprietary School and in 1863 passed the Oxford junior examination. After his family moved to Croydon next year, he was articled to Thomas Allom, a London architect. He learned the use of oils and watercolour, and executed perspective drawings for Sir George Gilbert Scott. Following illness, Sulman resumed work in London in 1868. While articled to H. R.
