Austin O. Sexton
Austin O. Sexton (August 15, 1852 – January 9, 1908) was an American politician from Chicago, Illinois. He born and raised in the city, Sexton studied law and opened a practice in 1876. The same year, he was elected as a Democrat to the Illinois House of Representatives, serving until 1884. He then moved to Lake View, Illinois, and was a prominent citizen there in its last years as an independent city to its first years as a part of Chicago. Upon its annexation, Sexton was elected to serve the area in the Chicago City Council, where he was president pro tempore and helped to oversee preparations for the World's Columbian Exposition. He unsuccessfully ran for a seat on the Supreme Court of Illinois in 1893, then mainly returned to his law practice. Later in his life he was the treasurer of a distillery in Hammond, Indiana. A president pro tempore or speaker pro tempore is a constitutionally recognized officer of a legislative body who presides over the chamber in the absence of the normal presiding officer. The phrase ''pro tempore'' is Latin "for the time being". In Argentina, a similar role is carried by the Provisional President of the Argentine Senate in the absence of the Vice President of Argentina. The Ancient Order of United Workmen (AOUW) was a fraternal organization in the United States and Canada, providing mutual social and financial support after the American Civil War. It was the first of the "fraternal benefit societies", organizations that would offer insurance as well as sickness, accident, death and burial policies. History The order began when John Jordan Upchurch, a mechanic on the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad living in Meadville, Pennsylvania, became dissatisfied with a group he had joined, the League of Friendship, Mechanical Order of the Sun. The latter society had established a lodge, called a subordinate League, in Meadville on April 20, 1868, and its membership was composed almost entirely of mechanics, engineers, firemen and day labors working on the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad and in the local shops.
