Austin Letheridge Bender
A. L. “Chunk” Bender (June 6, 1916 – August 28, 1980) was the mayor of Chattanooga, mayor of the City of Chattanooga, Tennessee from 1969 to 1971 after serving as Commissioner for many years. Due to health problems he declined a re-election bid. While the office of mayor in Chattanooga is officially non-partisan, he was a member of the United States Democratic Party, Democratic Party. Biography Bender was born in 1916 in Chattanooga, the youngest of 14 children. In 1938 he married Rozelle Kelso (1916-2012) from Fayetteville, Tennessee. He served in the United States Army during World War II and attained the rank of captain. He saw action in the Pacific. While he was at war, his first daughter, Patricia Ann, was born. Chattanooga ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Hamilton County, Tennessee, United States. Located along the Tennessee River bordering Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, it also extends into Marion County, Tennessee, Marion County on its western end. Fayetteville is a city and the county seat of Lincoln County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 6,994 at the 2000 census, and 6,827 at the 2010 census. Carey Estes Kefauver (; July 26, 1903 – August 10, 1963) was an American politician from Tennessee. A member of the Democratic Party, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1939 to 1949 and in the Senate from 1949 until his death in 1963. After leading a much-publicized investigation into organized crime in the early 1950s, he twice sought his party's nomination for President of the United States. In 1956, he was selected by the Democratic National Convention to be the running mate of presidential nominee Adlai Stevenson.
