Austin Evans
Austin William Evans (born 3 June 1968) is an Australian politician. He was a Nationals member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 14 October 2017 to 23 March 2019, representing Murray after a by-election held to replace Adrian Piccoli. Evans grew up in Narrandera and worked for an irrigation company in Coleambally. He was the last mayor of Murrumbidgee Shire before its amalgamation with Jerilderie Shire, and served as administrator of the resulting Murrumbidgee Council Murrumbidgee Council is a local government area in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. Adrian Piccoli
Adrian Piccoli (; born 24 March 1970) is a former Australian politician who represented the electoral district of Murray in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 2015 to 2017, and the district of Murrumbidgee from 1999 to 2015. He was the deputy leader of the Nationals in the New South Wales Parliament from 2008 to 2016. Piccoli served as the Minister for Education between April 2011 and January 2017, in both the O'Farrell and Baird ministries. Personal life Of Italian descent, Piccoli was born in Griffith. He completed a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Laws at the Australian National University in 1993. Prior to starting his political career, Piccoli worked as an irrigation rice farmer and solicitor. He is married, has two children, and is a Roman Catholic. Jerilderie Shire
Jerilderie Shire was a local government area in the Murray region of southern New South Wales, Australia. The Shire was located adjacent to the Newell Highway. The Shire was declared in 1918 after the amalgamation of the former Municipality of Jerilderie (1889 – 1918) and Wunnamurra Shire (1906 – 1918). It was dissolved in 2016 after its amalgamation with Murrumbidgee Shire to create Murrumbidgee Council At the time of dissolution, Jerilderie Shire was the second smallest local government area in New South Wales, in terms of population. Murrumbidgee Council
Murrumbidgee Council is a local government area in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. This area was formed in 2016 from the merger of the Murrumbidgee Shire and the Jerilderie Shire. The combined area comprises and covers the urban areas of Coleambally, Darlington Point and Jerilderie and the surrounding cropping and pastoral areas. At the time of its establishment, the estimated population of the area was 4,047. The inaugural mayor of Murrumbidgee Council is former Jerilderie Shire councillor Ruth McRae, elected on 21 September 2017. Cr McRae was elected as mayor for the second term on 24 September 2019. Coleambally
Coleambally () is a small town in the Riverina of New South Wales, Australia, in Murrumbidgee Local Government Area. Coleambally is one of the newest towns in the state of New South Wales, officially opened in June 1968, with the Post Office opening on 1 April 1970. Designed to act as the centre for the surrounding Coleambally Irrigation Area, at the 2016 census, Coleambally had a population of 1331. Its name is Aboriginal, probably meaning a swift in flight. The spine-tailed swift is one of the most powerful fliers known, wheeling and sweeping at high speed in search of flying insects. Narrandera, New South Wales
Narrandera ( ), until around 1949 also spelled "Narandera", is a town located in the central Riverina region of south-western New South Wales, Australia. The town lies on the junction of the Newell Highway, Newell and Sturt Highway, Sturt highways, adjacent to the Murrumbidgee River, and it is considered the gateway to the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. 2017 Murray State By-election
A by-election was held in the New South Wales state electoral district of Murray on 14 October 2017. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Adrian Piccoli (), former deputy leader of the National Party. The National Party barely retained the seat and, after distribution of preferences, Austin Evans was elected. Helen Dalton, candidate for the Shooters, Fishers & Farmers Party seen a swing of more than 13% on her personal vote building on the 2015 result. The by-election was held on the same day as by-elections in Blacktown and Cootamundra. The conduct of all three by-elections was administered by the NSW Electoral Commission.
