Aurigids
Aurigids is a meteor shower occurring primarily within September. The comet Kiess (C/1911 N1) is the source of the material that causes the meteors. The comet's orbital period is stated as approximately 1800 to 2000 years, with showers observed in the years 1935, '86, '94 and 2007 . α & δ The Alpha were discovered by C. Hoffmeister and A. Auriga (constellation)
Auriga is a constellation in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is one of the 88 modern constellations; it was among the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy. Its name is Latin for '(the) charioteer', associating it with various mythological beings, including Erichthonius and Myrtilus. Auriga is most prominent during winter evenings in the northern Hemisphere, as are five other constellations that have stars in the Winter Hexagon asterism. Because of its northern declination, Auriga is only visible in its entirety as far south as -34°; for observers farther south it lies partially or fully below the horizon. Kiess (C/1911 N1)
1788 Kiess, provisional designation , is a carbonaceous Themistian asteroid from the outer region of the asteroid belt, approximately 20 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 25 July 1952, by the Indiana Asteroid Program at the U.S. Goethe Link Observatory near Brooklyn, Indiana, United States, and later named after astronomer Carl Kiess. Orbit and classification The C-type asteroid is a member of the Themis family, a dynamical family of outer-belt asteroids with nearly coplanar ecliptical orbits. The asteroid orbits the Sun in the outer main-belt at a distance of 2.6–3.6 AU once every 5 years and 6 months (2,010 days). Carl Clarence Kiess
Carl Clarence Kiess (October 18, 1887 – October 16, 1967) was an American astronomer. His main contributions was in the study of solar and stellar spectra. Kiess was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He earned a BA in astronomy from Indiana University in 1910 and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1913. After teaching at the University of Missouri, Pomona College, and the University of Michigan, Kiess took a position at the National Bureau of Standards in 1917. He retired from the bureau in 1957. While working at the Lick Observatory on July 6, 1911, Kiess discovered comet C/1911 N1, which was named after him. A lunar crater and the asteroid 1788 were also named after him.
