Auriculora
''Auriculora'' is a fungal genus in the family Ramalinaceae. It comprises the single species ''Auriculora byssomorpha'', a tropical crustose lichen. Both the genus and its species were described in 1988 by the German lichenologist Klaus Kalb. The main characteristic of ''Auriculora'' is the ear-like appendages at the margins of the apothecia (fruiting bodies). Description ''Auriculora'' is characterised by a crustose, -lacking thallus containing green algae of the genus '' Protococcus''. The thallus is to and may be fringed by a well-developed filamentous . It shows distinct zonation, with a byssoid basal layer of loosely interwoven, thick-walled hyphae and a more compact upper layer enclosing the . Ramalinaceae
The Ramalinaceae are a family of lichen-forming fungi in the order Lecanorales. First proposed by Carl Adolph Agardh in 1821, the family now comprises 63 genera and about 750 species. Ramalinaceae lichens exhibit diverse growth forms, including crustose, fruticose, squamulose, leprose, and byssoid thalli, and form symbiotic relationships primarily with green algae of the genus ''Trebouxia''. The family is characterised by pale-coloured thalli, apothecia (fruiting bodies) that are typically pale but may darken with age, and ascospores that vary in shape and septation. Klaus Kalb
Klaus Kalb (born 1942) is a German lichenologist and an authority on tropical lichens. Born in Nuremberg, he studied at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg before pursuing a career that significantly advanced the field of lichenology, particularly in Brazil. Kalb's work in São Paulo from 1978 to 1981 led to a collaboration with Brazilian lichenologist Marcelo Pinto Marcelli, which is considered a model for non-commercial benefit-sharing in taxonomic research. He later became an associate professor at the University of Regensburg and is known for editing the exsiccata series ''Lichenes Neotropici''. Kalb's contributions to lichenology include over 120 scientific publications, the description of numerous new species, and the development of a substantial lichen collection.
