Augustus Oldford
William Augustus Oldford (born 1925) is a Canadian former social worker, magistrate and politician in Newfoundland. He represented Fortune Bay in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1971 to 1972 as a Liberal. The son of Augustus Oldford and Hilda Rose, he was born in Burnside and was educated there and at Memorial University College. He taught school for four years and then worked as a welfare officer at Jackson's Arm from 1951 to 1958. He then served as a magistrate until 1971, when he stepped down from the bench to enter provincial politics. Fortune Bay—Cape La Hune is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. When created in 1975 it was called Fortune-Hermitage. As of 2011, there are 6,053 eligible voters living within the district. The district covers a larger section of Newfoundland's south coast. The district includes territory east of Burgeo, and stretches to the end of Fortune Bay near the beginning of the Burin Peninsula. The Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly is the unicameral deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It meets in the Confederation Building in St. John's. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the King of Canada in Right of Newfoundland and Labrador, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. The governing party sits on the left side of the speaker of the House of Assembly as opposed to the traditional right side of the speaker. This tradition dates back to the 1850s as the heaters in the Colonial Building were located on the left side. The Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador is a political party in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The party is the provincial branch, and affiliate of the federal Liberal Party of Canada. It has served as the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador since December 14, 2015. Jackson's Arm is a town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, located on White Bay. It was settled by John Wicks of Christchurch, England, around 1870. The Post Office was established in 1892 and the first Postmistress was Belinda Peddle. The town had a population of 435 in 1956 and 277 as of the 2021 Canadian census.
