Augrabies Falls
The Augrabies Falls is a waterfall on the Orange River, the largest river in South Africa. Since 1966 the waterfall, set in a desolate and rugged milieu, is enclosed by the Augrabies Falls National Park. The falls are around in height. Some sources cite an approximate height of 480 feet; this is actually the height from the base of the canyon to the top of the walls, not that of the falls themselves. Exploration The original Khoikhoi residents named the waterfall "Ankoerebis" — "place of great noise" — from which the Trek Boers, who settled here later on, derived the name, "Augrabies". The last leader of area's native residents was Klaas Pofadder who lived on an island upstream of the falls, now known as Klaas Island. The first European to see the falls was the renegade Swedish mercenary Hendrik Jakob Wikar. He arrived at the falls in October 1778, after years long wanderings in the wilderness. When another traveler, George Thompson, was led to the falls by his Griqua peopl ...

Augrabies Falls National Park
Augrabies Falls National Park is a national park located around the Augrabies Falls, about 120 km west of Upington in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. The Augrabies Falls National Park covers an area of 820 km2 and stretches along the Orange River. The area is very arid. The waterfall is about 60 metres high and is awe-inspiring when the river is in flood. The gorge below the falls averages about 240 m deep and runs for 18 kilometres. The gorge provides an impressive example of erosion into a granitic basement. The park was established in 1966. Original Inhabitants The original Khoekhoe people named the waterfall , meaning the "place of great noise". The Khoi and San communities within the greater national park inhabit domed huts called . Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon
The Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon is a self-sufficient run over seven days, covering an approximate distance of . The event takes place in the Kalahari Desert in the proximity of the Augrabies Falls on the Orange River. The route traverses the Augrabies Falls National Park, private game parks including Khamkirri, Thorntree and Dabaras and many private farmlands. Due to issues the private landowners have had with the organisers the 2014 event took place entirely within the borders of the AFNP and entirely on the Southern side. This contrasting environment with average day temperatures reaching in excess of 40 °C in the summer months and dropping to below 5 °C at night during the winter, presents a daunting challenge to the extreme athlete and determined adventurer alike. Known as the 'Big Daddy' in the South African running circles, the Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon is event organised by Extreme Marathons, and has its place on the International Calendar of ...

Beolens B, Watkins M, Grayson M (2011). ''The Eponym Dictionary of Reptiles''. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press. xiii + 296 pp. . (''Platysaurus broadleyi'', p. 39). This area includes river valleys along the lower Orange River, Northern Cape Province, and Gordonia District. Habitat The preferred natural ...
