Aubrey Murphy (violinist)
Aubrey Murphy is an Irish violinist who is Concertmaster of the Cleveland Opera Theater and Opera Project Columbus. Murphy was previously Concertmaster of the Opera Australia (OA) orchestra in Sydney, Australia and was Principal Violinist for the Royal Opera House Orchestra, London, UK. Background Murphy was born in Dublin, Ireland and began playing piano and violin at the age of five. At age ten, he was the first Irish student ever to enter the Yehudi Menuhin School, where he studied with Felix Andrievsky, Peter Norris and Hans Keller. In 1983 he began his studies at Indiana University, Bloomington, under Franco Gulli, Henryk Kowalski, Josef Gingold and Rostislav Dubinsky. Colin Davis
Sir Colin Rex Davis (25 September 1927 – 14 April 2013) was an English conductor, known for his association with the London Symphony Orchestra, having first conducted it in 1959. His repertoire was broad, but among the composers with whom he was particularly associated were Mozart, Berlioz, Elgar, Sibelius, Stravinsky and Tippett. Davis studied as a clarinetist, but was intent on becoming a conductor. After struggling as a freelance conductor from 1949 to 1957, he gained a series of appointments with orchestras including the BBC Scottish Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. He also held the musical directorships of Sadler's Wells Opera and the Royal Opera House, where he was principal conductor for over fifteen years. Giuseppe Rocca
Giuseppe Rocca (27 April 1807 – 27 January 1865) was an Italian violin maker of the 19th century. Rocca's preferred models were the 1742 Alard Guarneri and the 1716 Messiah Strad. His instruments are appreciated today and are considered better than those made by his son Enrico Rocca. Rocca was born in Barbaresco, a small village in the Langhe hills near Alba in Piemonte, and died in Genoa. His parents were Maria Teresa and Giovanni Battista Rocca. He was educated and served in the military and soon after married Anna Maria Calizzano. At the time, Rocca was a baker. The circumstances are unknown what brought him, in a few years, to take up an apprenticeship in Giovanni Francesco Pressenda's Turin workshop. By 1834, his wife died and he moved to Turin to pursue his craft. Nicolette Ella Fraillon (born 29 July 1960) is an Australian conductor, who was chief conductor of The Australian Ballet from 2003 until 2022. Richard Sidney Hickox (5 March 1948 – 23 November 2008) was an English conductor of choral, orchestral and operatic music. Early life and education Hickox was born in Stokenchurch in Buckinghamshire into a musical family. After attending the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe from 1959 to 1966, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London from 1966 to 1967, then was an organ scholar at Queens' College, Cambridge, from 1967 to 1970. Career In 1967, while his father was Vicar of Wooburn, Buckinghamshire, Hickox founded the Wooburn Festival and eventually became its president. The Festival still takes place and features music, drama and the visual arts. Hickox also founded the Wooburn Singers and continued as conductor until succeeded by Stephen Jackson. He wrote his own libretto, basing it on the Italian play '' L'amore delle tre melarance'', or ''The Love for Three Oranges'' ( ''Lyubov k tryom apyelsinam'') by Carlo Gozzi, and conducted the premiere, which took place at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on 30 December 1921. History Composition The opera resulted from a commission during Prokofiev's first visit to the United States in 1918.
