Aubert Y. Coran
Aubert Y. Coran (1932–2020) was an American scientist noted for his contributions to thermoplastic elastomers and Sulfur vulcanization, vulcanization chemistry of rubber. In 1983, he won the Melvin Mooney Distinguished Technology Award, bestowed by the American Chemical Society to individuals "who have exhibited exceptional technical competency by making significant and repeated contributions to rubber science and technology". In 1995, the rubber division of the American Chemical Society bestowed on Coran the Charles Goodyear Medal in honor of his international contributions to polymer science and development. Personal Coran was born March 24, 1932, in St. Louis, Missouri. He died on October 20, 2020, in Sarasota, Florida, at the age of 88. Thermoplastic Elastomer
Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), sometimes referred to as thermoplastic rubbers, are a class of copolymers or a physical mix of polymers (usually a plastic and a rubber) that consist of materials with both thermoplastic and elastomeric properties. While most elastomers are thermosets, thermoplastics are in contrast relatively easy to use in manufacturing, for example, by injection moulding. Thermoplastic elastomers show advantages typical of both rubbery materials and plastic materials. The benefit of using thermoplastic elastomers is the ability to stretch to moderate elongations and return to its near original shape creating a longer life and better physical range than other materials. Thomas Midgley Jr
Thomas Midgley Jr. (May 18, 1889 – November 2, 1944) was an American mechanical and chemical engineer. He played a major role in developing leaded gasoline (tetraethyl lead) and some of the first chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), better known in the United States by the brand name Freon; both products were later banned from common use due to their harmful impact on human health and the environment. He was granted more than 100 patents over the course of his career. In 1944 he accidentally strangled himself to death in Worthington, Ohio. The term originally referred exclusively to the treatment of natural rubber with sulfur, which remains the most common practice. It has also grown to include the hardening of other (synthetic) rubbers via various means. Alan Neville Gent (11 November 1927 – 20 September 2012) was a distinguished professor of the University of Akron widely recognized during his lifetime as a world-leading authority on the topic of adhesion physics, crystalline and glassy polymers, and the fracturing of rubber. Contributions to rubber science Gent discovered the Fletcher-Gent effect and created the Gent hyperelastic model. He was involved in the investigation of the O-ring failure in the space shuttle Challenger disaster.
