Attavyros (municipality)
Attavyros () is a former municipality on the island of Rhodes, in the Dodecanese, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Rhodes, of which it is a municipal unit. Geography The population is 2,127 (2021 census); the land area is 234.350 km². It is the westernmost municipal unit on the island, occupying the central portion of its western coast. The seat of the municipality was in Emponas. Its largest other towns are Ágios Isídoros and Kritinia. South Aegean
The South Aegean (, ) is one of the thirteen administrative regions of Greece. It consists of the Cyclades and Dodecanese island groups in the central and southeastern Aegean Sea. Administration The South Aegean region was established in the 1987 administrative reform. With the 2010 Kallikratis plan, its powers and authority were redefined and extended. Along with the North Aegean region, it is supervised by the Decentralized Administration of the Aegean based at Piraeus. The capital of the region is situated in Ermoupoli on the island of Syros. Kritinia
Kritinia (Greek: Κρητηνία) is a Greek village and community in the municipal unit of Attavyros, on the island of Rhodes, South Aegean region. In 2021 the population was 388 for the community, which includes the locality of Kameiros Skala. History The village, meaning ''New Crete'', was founded by some families escaped from Crete (Κρήτη) during the Turkish rule in the island. Originally, the settlement was located by the coast, in the current position of Kameiros Skala; but after the Byzantine era it was moved on the hills, for safety against pirates. In 1658, the Venetian Doge Francesco Morosini tried to conquer Rhodes entering at Kameiros Skala beach, but the Venetian army was rejected. The castle above Kritinia, named ''Kastellos'' (Κάστελλος), was built in 1472 by Giorgio Orsini to protect the inhabitants of the village from the attacks of the Ottoman fleets. Monolithos, Greece
Monolithos () is a Greek village on the island of Rhodes, South Aegean region, belonging to the municipal unit of Attavyros. It is located 8 km south-east of Apolakkia and 28 km from Prasonisi. Overview The name of the village means "single stone" or "one stone." It typically refers to a large, single, solid block of stone or rock, often used in reference to natural formations or structures. The name refers to the Monolithos Castle, which is built on a large, solitary 100m high rock formation. These are the ruins of the castle of the Knights Hospitaller built in 1476, outside the village. This castle was built to protect the island from attacks. In fact, this castle was never conquered. The Castle of Monolithos is widely ruined today but it offers great views of the sea and the two islets opposite to it.
