Atomizer (album)
''Atomizer'' is the debut full-length album by American punk rock group Big Black released on January 1, 1986. The album is regarded as one of the greatest albums of the 1980s, and a forerunner of industrial rock. Background and release One song from the album, "Big Money", was released as a B-side to the " Il Duce" single prior to the release of ''Atomizer''. Homestead Records also issued "Big Money" and "Il Duce" the A-side of a 12" record with three live songs on the B-side (including the live version of "Cables" that would appear on ''Atomizer'') with the agreement that the 12" be used for promotional purposes only. The label sent the promo 12" to radio stations, then sold extra copies outside of Big Black's native Chicago, hoping the band would never find out. When they did, Big Black left Homestead and signed to Touch and Go Records. Big Black
Big Black was an American punk rock band from Evanston, Illinois, active from 1981 to 1987. Founded first as a solo project by singer and guitarist Steve Albini, the band became a trio with an initial lineup that included guitarist Santiago Durango and bassist Jeff Pezzati, both of Naked Raygun. In 1985, Pezzati was replaced by Dave Riley (musician), Dave Riley, who played on Big Black's two full-length studio albums, ''Atomizer (album), Atomizer'' (1986) and ''Songs About Fucking'' (1987). Big Black's aggressive and abrasive music was characterized by distinctively clanky guitars and the use of a drum machine rather than a drum kit, elements that foreshadowed industrial rock. A drum machine is an electronic musical instrument that creates percussion sounds, drum beats, and patterns. Drum machines may imitate drum kits or other percussion instruments, or produce unique sounds, such as synthesized electronic tones. ''Gimme Indie Rock: 500 Essential American Underground Rock Albums 1981–1996'' is a music reference book by American music journalist Andrew Earles. It was published on September 15, 2014, by Voyageur Press, an imprint of Quarto Publishing Group. Reception ''Gimme Indie Rock'' has received generally favorable reviews from critics. ''Spectrum Culture'' scored the album 3 out of 5, stating that it was more of a "useful reference ..than a consistently enjoyable read, but that usefulness may well lead you to great music you’ve never heard before." Obsolescence is the process of becoming antiquated, out of date, old-fashioned, no longer in general use, or no longer useful, or the condition of being in such a state. Analog recording is a category of techniques used for the recording of analog signals. This enables later playback of the recorded analog audio. Analog audio recording began with mechanical systems such as the phonautograph and phonograph. Later, electronic techniques such as wire recording, wire and tape recorder, tape recording were developed. Analog recording methods store analog signals directly in or on the media. The signal may be stored as a physical texture on a phonograph record, or a fluctuation in the field strength of a magnetic recording. Analog transmission methods use analog signals to distribute audio content. Steve Albini
Steven Frank Albini (; July 22, 1962 – May 7, 2024) was an American musician and audio engineer. He founded and fronted the influential post-hardcore and noise rock bands Big Black (1981–1987), Rapeman (1987–1989) and Shellac (band), Shellac (1992–2024), and engineered acclaimed albums such as Pixies (band), the Pixies' ''Surfer Rosa'' (1988), PJ Harvey's ''Rid of Me'', Nirvana (band), Nirvana's ''In Utero'' (both 1993) and Manic Street Preachers' ''Journal for Plague Lovers'' (2009). Albini was born in Pasadena, California, and raised in Missoula, Montana. After discovering the Ramones as a teenager, he immersed himself in punk rock and underground culture. He earned a degree in journalism at Northwestern University, Illinois, and wrote for local zines in Chicago. He formed Big Black in 1981 and recruited Santiago Durango and Dave Riley. ''The Rich Man's Eight Track Tape'' is an album by American punk rock band Big Black. It was released in 1987 by Touch and Go Records. The album is a Compact disc, CD compilation of Big Black's ''Atomizer (album), Atomizer'' album (minus the song "Strange Things"), Heartbeat (Wire song)#Big Black version, "Heartbeat" single and ''Headache (EP), Headache'' EP. ''Atomizer'' is pictured on the cover artwork as an eight-track tape playing in a Panasonic TNT portable player. The title of the album, and the liner notes by Steve Albini, show the band's low regard for compact discs, drawing parallels between CD and the 8-track tape of 1970s, preferring to release all of their material on LP record, vinyl LP records. Heartbeat (Wire Song)
"Heartbeat" is a song written by Colin Newman and originally recorded and released in 1978 by the English rock band Wire on their second album '' Chairs Missing''. Guest Kate Lukas played flute on the track. The song was not uncommon as either an opener or a closer of Wire's live sets at the time. Producer Mike Thorne has called it the band's "first overt love song". Big Black version "Heartbeat" was covered and released as a single in 1987 by Chicago post-hardcore band Big Black. Apart from the Wire cover, the other two tracks on the record are originals. This 7" record was sold together with the ''Headache'' EP or used for promotional give-aways.
