The Atlanta Empire are a women's American football team in the Extreme Football League ( X League) based in Duluth, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. The team is coached and co-owned by Dane Robinson. History The Extreme Football League ( X League) was announced in December 2019, as a successor to the Legends Football League (LFL). The announcement included the Empire, a successor to the LFL's Atlanta Steam. The X League's 2020 season was postponed, and the league also did not operate during 2021, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The Empire first competed during the 2022 X League season, winning both of their regular season games, over the Austin Sound and Denver Rush. Duluth, Georgia
Duluth ( ) is a city in Gwinnett County, Georgia, United States. Located north of Interstate 85, it is approximately northeast of Atlanta. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, Duluth had a population of 31,873, and the United States Census Bureau estimated the population to be 31,864 as of 2021. The 2022 X League season was the inaugural season of the Extreme Football League (commonly known as the XLeague) in the United States. It began in June and concluded in September with the Chicago Blitz winning the inaugural "X Cup" championship game. The league had most recently operated in 2019, branded as the Legends Football League (LFL). Season summary The inaugural X-League season was shortened, with each team's regular season reduced from four games to two. The truncated season kicked off on June 10, with a match between the Chicago Blitz and Kansas City Force. Atlanta Steam
The Atlanta Steam were a women's American football team of the Legends Football League (LFL) based in Duluth, Georgia, a Gwinnett County suburb of Atlanta, with home games at the Infinite Energy Arena. The Steam was the league's 14th team and played its first season in 2013. The Steam were announced in 2008 as one of the 10 teams for the LFL's inaugural 2009–10 season, but reportedly had issues with finding a venue. The team was then reported to be moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, but that team did not launch in 2009 either. LFL's Atlanta franchise originally began as the proposed St. Louis Saints.
