Atkinson and Conrad was an architectural partnership in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia between Henry Wallace Atkinson and Arnold Henry Conrad. Many of their works are now heritage-listed. History In 1889, while working as a draughtsman in the office of the Queensland Colonial Architect, Henry Atkinson submitted an entry into a competition for a new Head Fire Station on the corner of Ann and Edward Streets in Brisbane. Having won the competition, he left the Queensland Public Service and started his own private practice. The Head Fire Station was completed in December 1890 but has since been demolished. However, his architectural practice has continued through a series of partnerships. In 1907, he took Charles McLay as his partner creating Atkinson and McLay. That partnership lasted until 1918, when McLay died. It produced a number of significant works and is the origins of one of Brisbane's major architectural firms in the present day. History The partnership between Henry Wallace Atkinson and Charles McLay was established in 1907. Wynnum Fire Station
Wynnum Fire Station is a heritage-listed former fire station at 39 Mountjoy Terrace, Wynnum, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Atkinson & Conrad and built from 1922 to 1938. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 28 May 1999. History A modest, functional civic building, the former Wynnum Fire Station is a prominent landmark on Mountjoy Terrace in Wynnum. Between 1860 and 1868 there were five attempts to form a fire fighting service for Brisbane. Each brigade struggled to survive, unable to attract a viable subscription base and hampered by inadequate equipment and an unreliable water supply. The establishment of an effective fire service did not enjoy a high priority among civic and government leaders. Coorparoo Fire Station
Coorparoo Fire Station is a heritage-listed former fire station at 219 Cavendish Road, Coorparoo, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Atkinson & Conrad and built in 1935. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 11 June 2003. History From about 1931, local progression associations led by C. Beak and W. J. Smout began to lobby to have a fire station established in their area. However, the fire board did not have the funds to establish a new station until March 1935 when they borrowed from the Commonwealth Bank. The fire station was opened on Thursday 26 September 1935 by John Innes Brown, Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for Logan. Charles McLay
Charles McLay (circa 1860 – 2 May 1918) was a Scottish-born architect in Queensland, Australia. Some of his works are now heritage-listed. Architectural career After working for a number of years in the Public Works Department in the Queensland Government Architect's Office, McLay entered into a partnership with Henry Wallace Atkinson in 1906, trading as Atkinson and McLay. Other interests McLay joined the Naval Defence Force as a sub-lieutenant on 6 May 1898 and was promoted to lieutenant on 31 October 1901. He was commander when he was placed on the retired list of the Australian Naval Brigade on 15 January 1910. Following the resignation of Robin Dods, McLay was appointed Diocesan Architect to the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane in 1916; it passed to Atkinson after McLay's death in 1918.
