Cole Albert Porter (June 9, 1891 – October 15, 1964) was an American composer and songwriter. Many of his songs became Standard (music), standards noted for their witty, urbane lyrics, and many of his scores found success on Broadway theatre, Broadway and in Hollywood films. Born to a wealthy family in Indiana, Porter defied his grandfather's wishes for him to practice law and took up music as a profession. Classically trained, he was drawn to musical theatre. After a slow start, he began to achieve success in the 1920s, and by the 1930s he was one of the major songwriters for the Broadway musical stage. Unlike many successful Broadway composers, Porter wrote the lyrics as well as the music for his songs. After a serious horseback riding accident in 1937, Porter was left disabled and in constant pain, but he continued to work. ''You Never Know'' is a musical theatre, musical with a book by Rowland Leigh, adapted from the original European play ''By Candlelight'', by and Karl Farkas, with music by Cole Porter and , lyrics by Cole Porter, additional lyrics by Leigh and Edwin Gilbert (writer), Edwin Gilbert, directed by Leigh, and songs by others. The show was written not long after the riding accident that left Porter semi-crippled. Background The show was first produced in Europe with a small cast, but the Shubert Brothers (who produced it for Broadway), did not want to produce it with no chorus or large stage numbers. In his AllMusic review, William Ruhlmann says that ''Gentle Is My Love'' is "a collection of romantic ballads that Wilson addresses with her characteristic emotionalism and precision.
