Astra Film Corp
Astra Film Corp was an American film production company that produced silent films. Louis J. Gasnier was the company's president. George B. Seitz co-founded it. It was making films by 1916. It became Louis J. Gasnier Productions after Seitz left. The studio operated in Jersey City, New Jersey before expanding to Fort Lee, New Jersey. The Fort Lee studio site at 1 Congress Street was acquired from Pathé in 1916. The company distributed its films with Pathé. Rolin Studio in Los Angeles also worked with Pathé. The company's '' Hands Up'' serial included a storyline featuring the Inca. The studio produced Pathé's photoplay films including ''Stranded in Arcady''. It was an adaptation of a story by Francis Lynde and starred Irene Castle. It was directed by Frank Hall Crane. The company also produced ''The Fatal Ring'' and ''The Seven Pearls'' serials. Astra Films
Astra Films was a British film production and distribution company of the silent era. It was set up in Leeds following the First World War by the film director Herbert Wilcox, his younger brother Charles Wilcox and H.W. Thompson, a leading figure in film distribution in the North of England.Low p.132-33 After the company's initial success, Wilcox left the firm to set up on his own and rose to become one of the most successful independent producer-directors in the world. After a merger the company released films under the name Astra-National. While smaller than the leading British studios Ideal Films and Stoll Pictures, it was an important producer of films before the Slump of 1924. As was common during the era, many of the same writers, directors and a stock company of actors worked on various different films for the company. ''Via Wireless'' is a 1915 American silent drama film directed by George Fitzmaurice and starring Bruce McRae, Gail Kane and Brandon Hurst. The film was based on a 1908 play of the same name by Paul Armstrong and Winchell Smith and was adapted for the screen by Ouida Bergère. Some location shooting for the film was done in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Greenwich, Connecticut. Plot The lead character, Lieutenant Sommers, of the U. S. Navy, comes to work for John Durant who is designing weapons for the military. Sommers designs a gun for the man but the gun explodes during testing, killing two people. Due to this, Sommers is being sent home from France to face an inquiry. The foil of this story is the character Edward Pinckney who has eyes on John Duran's daughter, Frances. Pinckney, jealous of Frances and Sommers relationship, is the one who had sabotaged his gun before it could be tested. Selig Polyscope Company
The Selig Polyscope Company was an American motion picture company that was founded in 1896 by William Selig in Chicago, Illinois. The company produced hundreds of early, widely distributed commercial moving pictures, including the first films starring Tom Mix, Harold Lloyd, Colleen Moore, and Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle. Selig Polyscope also established Southern California's first permanent movie studio, in the historic Edendale district of Los Angeles. Ending film production in 1918, the business, which had become known for its film production animals, became an animal and prop supplier to other studios and a zoo and amusement park attraction in East Los Angeles. The amusement park and zoo went into decline during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Grace Darmond (born Grace Marie Glionna; November 20, 1893 – October 8, 1963) was a Canadian-American actress. Early life Grace Marie Glionna was born in Toronto on November 20, 1893. Her parents were Vincent Baptiste "James" Glionna, an Italian-American barber and violinist who had lived in Canada since 1877, and Alice Louise Sparks Glionna, an Ontario native of Irish descent. Grace was baptised as a Roman Catholic on December 3, 1893, as Mary Gracie Glionna. The 1920 copy of Darmond's birth certificate gives her birth name as Grace Mary Glionna and her birth year as 1898. George Fitzmaurice
George Fitzmaurice (13 February 1885 – 13 June 1940) was a French-born film director and Film producer, producer. Career Fitzmaurice's career first started as a set designer on stage. Beginning in 1914, and continuing until his death in 1940, he directed a total of over 80 films; several of these were successful, including ''The Son of the Sheik'', ''Raffles (1930 film), Raffles'', ''Mata Hari (1931 film), Mata Hari'', and ''Suzy (1936 film), Suzy''. Arthur Charles Miller, A.S.C. (July 8, 1895 – July 13, 1970) was an American cinematographer. He was nominated for the Oscar for Best Cinematography six times, winning three times: for ''How Green Was My Valley'' in 1941, '' The Song of Bernadette'' in 1944, and '' Anna and the King of Siam'' in 1947. Career Born in Roslyn, New York, he began his movie career at the age of 13. According to a 1970 interview with Leonard Maltin, he once worked for a horse dealer. One day, he was returning home from delivering some horses and was sitting on a horse when a man offered him a job in motion pictures because he could ride bareback.
