Associação Atlética Alvorada, commonly known as Alvorada, is a Brazilian football club based in Alvorada, Tocantins state. They competed in the Série C and in the Copa do Brasil once. History The club was founded on January 26, 1993. They won the Copa Tocantins in 1997, and the Campeonato Tocantinense in 1998. Alvorada competed in the Série C in 1998, when they were eliminated in the First Stage of the competition, and in the same year in the Copa do Brasil, when they were eliminated in the First Round by Atlético Mineiro. Tocantins () is one of the 26 states of Brazil. It is the newest state, formed in 1988 and encompassing what had formerly been the northern two-fifths of the state of Goiás. The Campeonato Brasileiro Série C, commonly known as the Série C or the Brazilian Série C to distinguish it from the Italian Serie C, is the third tier of the Brazilian football league system. Unlike the first and second divisions, the Série C is not played in a double round robin system, arguably because many participating teams lack the financial conditions to travel long distances. Thus, the tournament is organized in regional groups and the table prevents teams from distant states from playing each other in the initial rounds. The Copa do Brasil 1998 was the 10th staging of the Copa do Brasil. The competition started on January 20, 1998, and concluded on May 30, 1998, with the second leg of the final, held at the Estádio do Morumbi in São Paulo, in which Palmeiras lifted the trophy for the first time with a 2–0 victory over Cruzeiro. Romário, of Flamengo, with 7 goals, was the competition's topscorer. Format The preliminary round was disputed by 20 clubs, while the first stage was disputed by 32 clubs, including the ones qualified from the preliminary stage. The competition was disputed in a knock-out format. In the preliminary stage and in the first round if the away team won the first leg with an advantage of at least two goals, the second leg was not played and the club automatically qualified to the next round.
