Association For Women's Sanctuary And Development
Association for Women's Sanctuary and Development (AWSAD) is a women's shelter in Ethiopia. It is the first of its kind to be established in the country and began operations in 2003. AWSAD currently has various branches in several cities including Addis Ababa and Adama. History AWSAD was founded by Maria Yusuf in 2003, she is currently also its director. The NGO also maintains a newsletter which Billene Seyoum served as editor. The UN Women in collaboration with the Danish and Irish governments assisted AWSAD in launching the biggest women's shelter in the nation in 2015. In 2019, United Nations Development Programme supported AWSAD in opening sanctuaries for victims of sexual violence in war-torn northern Ethiopia. There have been several studies concerning women in Ethiopia. Historically, elite women in Ethiopia have been visible as administrators and warriors. This never translated into any benefit to improve the rights of women, but it had meant that women could inherit and own property and act as advisors on important communal matters. A women-only space is an area where only women (and in some cases children) are allowed, thus providing a place where they do not have to interact with men. Historically and globally, many cultures had, and many still have, some form of female seclusion. Billene Seyoum Woldeyes (Amharic: ቢለኔ ሥዩም ወልደየስ; born 1982) is an Ethiopian politician, poet, author and feminist who is serving as the Foreign Press Secretary for the Office of Prime Minister of Ethiopia since 2018.
