Assad-class Corvette
The Assad-class corvette were originally built for Iraq during the Iran–Iraq War, by Fincantieri in Italy. Six ships were ordered in 1981. They were completed just before Operation Desert Storm, and were never delivered due to embargoes by the Italian government. Four of the six ships were sold to the Malaysian Navy as s in 1995. The two remaining ships were laid up in La Spezia from 1990, but in 2005 it was announced they would be delivered to the New Iraqi Navy. The deal, however was later cancelled due to the condition of the ships upon inspection. On 19 May 2017, it was reported that the remaining two vessels would be delivered to the Iraq Navy after 26 years. They eventually left La Spezia on a semi-submersible carrier ''Eide Trader'' on 22 May and reached Iraq in June 2017. The Libyan Navy operated four craft but their fate is unknown. Corvette
A corvette is a small warship. It is traditionally the smallest class of vessel considered to be a proper (or " rated") warship. The warship class above the corvette is that of the frigate, while the class below was historically that of the sloop-of-war. The modern roles that a corvette fulfills include coastal patrol craft, missile boat and fast attack craft. These corvettes are typically between 500 and 2,000 tons. Recent designs of corvettes may approach 3,000 tons and include a hangar to accommodate a helicopter, having size and capabilities that overlap with smaller frigates. However unlike contemporary frigates, a modern corvette does not have sufficient endurance or seaworthiness for long voyages. The word "corvette" is first found in Middle French, a diminutive of the Dutch word ''corf'', meaning a "basket", from the Latin ''corbis''. Laksamana-class Corvette
The Laksamana class is a class of small missile corvettes comprising four ships currently in service with the Royal Malaysian Navy. Two out of four ships of the Laksamana class are currently serving in the 24th Corvette Squadron of the Royal Malaysian Navy, while the remaining two were decommissioned on 5 June 2025, with plans to preserve one of the decommissioned ships as a monument in Dataran Pahlawan, Putrajaya still underway. Otomat Anti-ship Missile
The Otomat is an anti-ship and coastal defence missile developed by the Italian company Oto Melara jointly with Matra and now made by MBDA. The name comes, for the first versions, from the name of the two builders ("Oto Melara" and "Matra") and, for the later versions, Teseo, from the Italian word for Theseus. The MILAS variant is an anti-submarine missile. In its latest version Mk/2E purchased by the Italian Navy is a medium range anti-ship missile and a ground attack missile. Origins The Otomat missile program started in 1967, the same year in which the Israeli destroyer ''Eilat'' was sunk by three Soviet-made P-15 Termit anti-ship missiles. The Iraqi Navy (), is the naval warfare service branch of the Iraqi Armed Forces, Armed forces of Iraq. Formed in 1937, initially as the ''Iraqi Coastal Defense Force,'' its primary responsibilities was the protection of Iraq's coastline and offshore assets, the official name was changed on 12 January 2005 to the Iraqi Navy. As of February 2024, the navy had approximately 3,000 sailors and marines which form an Operational headquarters, five afloat squadrons, and two Marines (military), marine battalions.
