Aspirus Medford Hospital
Aspirus Medford Hospital, formerly known as Memorial Health Center, is a Critical Access Hospital with a Level IV Trauma Center and a birthing center located in Medford, Wisconsin. The facility is owned by the Wisconsin-based non-profit Aspirus Health. It also houses a satellite campus of the Aspirus Heart & Vascular Institute. History Early years In 1920, the privately owned Medford Clinic and Hospital was established by Dr. Conrad E. Nystrum (1869–1923), who had begun his medical practice in Medford in 1892. Despite an expansion in 1932 to 34 beds, the clinic-hospital often struggled to accommodate as many as 50 patients at one time. In 1959, it was estimated that each of the five practicing doctors in the area cared for 4,000 patients. With funds from a Hill–Burton Act, Hill-Burton grant and community donations, a new Memorial Hospital of Taylor County—a 50-bed, 10-bassinet facility—was built in Medford. Medford, Wisconsin
Medford is a city in Taylor County, in north-central Wisconsin, United States. The population was 4,349 at the 2020 census. The city is located mostly within the boundaries of the Town of Medford. It is the county seat of Taylor County. History Medford is located on historic Ojibwe forest land acquired by the United States in the 1837 Treaty of St. Peters. In 1864, the federal government authorized a grant of some of this land to subsidize railway construction through the area. The Wisconsin Central Railroad Company, controlled by Boston financier Gardner Colby, obtained the land grant and constructed the railroad in the 1870s. The railroad company and a local lumber milling company laid out the city of Medford in 1875 and sold lots for twenty-five dollars each. The railroad named the new settlement after Medford, Massachusetts, the hometown of a railroad official. Taylor County, Wisconsin
Taylor County is a county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 19,913. Its county seat is Medford. History The earliest recorded event in Taylor county probably occurred in 1661, when Wisconsin was claimed by New France. A band of Huron Indians from eastern Ontario had fled the Iroquois and taken refuge near the headwaters of the Black River, probably around Lake Chelsea in the northeast part of the county. Father René Menard, a French Jesuit priest who had travelled up the Great Lakes as far as Keweenaw Bay in upper Michigan, heard that these Hurons were starving. He decided to try to reach them to baptize them, despite his own weak health and scant supplies. Aspirus Health is a non-profit health system headquartered in Wausau, Wisconsin. The system includes 19 hospitals and serves portions of Wisconsin, Minnesota and the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was previously known as Community Health Care. Aspirus and Saint Luke's Duluth became a combined organization in March 2024. A birthing center is a healthcare facility, staffed by nurse midwives, midwives and/or obstetricians, for mothers in labor, who may be assisted by doulas and coaches.
