Amegilla
''Amegilla'' is a large genus of bees in the tribe Anthophorini. It has been split into many subgenera, including '' Asaropoda'', ''Micramegilla,'' '' Notomegilla'' and '' Zonamegilla''. Description ''Amegilla'' are generally medium-sized to very large bees, about 10-12mm of robust form. The body and legs are hairy, and the tongue and proboscis are long. All ''Amegilla'' species burrow to make nests and they are commonly referred to as "digger bees". Several species have blue metallic bands on the abdomen and are referred to as "blue-banded bees" Bands may differ with the sex, with males having more bands than females. Amegilla Bombiformis
''Amegilla bombiformis'', commonly known as the teddy bear bee or golden haired mortar bee, is an Australian native bee in the family Apidae. It was originally described by F. Smith in 1854 as ''Saropoda bombiformis'' from a collection near the Richmond River in New South Wales, before being reclassified in the genus ''Amegilla'' in 1965. Its specific epithet ''bombiformis'' is Latin for "form of a bumblebee". ''Amegilla bombiformis'' is a stocky bee which resembles a bumblebee in shape, and is covered in orange-brown fur. The abdomen has several dark hairless bands, seven in the case of males, six for females. It is similar in size to a European honeybee. Teddy bear bees have been recorded visiting ''Abelia'', ''Buddleja'', and blue flax lily (''Dianella caerulea'') flowers in the garden; males rest overnight attached to plant stems. Frederick Smith (entomologist)
Frederick Smith (30 December 1805 – 16 February 1879) was a British entomologist who worked at the zoology department of the British Museum from 1849, specialising in the Hymenoptera. Smith was born near York to William Smith and went to school at Leeds. He then studied under landscape engraver William Bernard Cooke, W.B. Cooke along with his nephew William Edward Shuckard. Together they took an interest in insects, especially the ants and bees. In 1841, following the death of William Bainbridge, he became a curator of the collections and the library of the Entomological Society of London. As an engraver he produced copies based on the works of Turner, Constable and David Roberts. He also worked with Gray arranging Hymenoptera in the British Museum. In 1849 he succeeded Edward Doubleday as a member of the zoologicy department. The Apinae are the subfamily that includes the majority of bees in the family Apidae.
