Asahel Kidder House
The Asahel Kidder House, is an historic house at 1108 South Main Street in Fair Haven, Vermont. Built about 1843, by the efforts of a prosperous local farmer, it is a remarkably sophisticated expression of Greek Revival architecture for a rural setting. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Description and history The Asahel Kidder House stands about south of the village center of Fair Haven, on the east side of Vermont Route 22A, the principal route leading south from the village. The house consists of a main block and two substantial ells, and there is also a 19th-century barn on the property, facing Bolger Road. The house's main block is stories in height, with a front-facing gabled roof and clapboard siding. The main facade is three bays wide, with corner pilasters rising to an entablature and fully pedimented gable. A triangular louver occupies the center of the gable. Vermont Route 22A
Vermont Route 22A (VT 22A) is a state highway in western Vermont, United States. It is the northward continuation of New York State Route 22A. Its southern end is at the New York state line in Fair Haven and its northern end is in Ferrisburgh at U.S. Route 7 (US 7). As it is an extension of NY 22A, VT 22A is a spur route of NY 22, which runs roughly parallel to VT 22A west of the state border. This is a rather unusual case of one state having a suffixed route of another state's primary route. Vermont does not currently have a "Route 22." All of VT 22A north of Fair Haven was originally designated as Route 30A, a highway in the New England road marking system, in 1922. Fair Haven is a New England town, town in Rutland County, Vermont, Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,736 at the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census. Within the town is located the census-designated place of Fair Haven (CDP), Vermont, Fair Haven. The town is noted for its late 19th century residential and commercial architecture. History Fair Haven was chartered on October 27, 1779, to Ebenezer Allen and 76 associates, and first settled the same year. The township originally included West Haven, Vermont, West Haven, which was set off on October 20, 1792. The post office at Fair Haven was established in 1797. In 1783, Colonel Matthew Lyon moved to Fair Haven and began building watermill, mills at the waterfall, falls on the Castleton River.
