Erik Arup
Erik Ipsen Arup (November 22, 1876 – September 23, 1951) was a Danish historian and educator. He was most known as the pioneer of radical-liberal history writing in Denmark. Biography Arup was born at Slangerup in Frederikssund Municipality, Denmark. He was the son of the physician Peter Michael Christian Arup (1845–1915) and Malvina Cathrine Ipsen (1852–1934). He was raised in a cultured home and was the cousin of Danish-English structural engineer Ove Arup (1895–1988). He was educated as both a theologian and a historian. Arup attended the University of Copenhagen and was awarded his dr.phil. in 1907. As a young man he was deeply impressed by Viggo Hørup and his political anti-militarist line. Jens Lauritz Arup
Jens Lauritz Arup (20 April 1793 – 9 April 1874) was a Norwegian bishop and politician. He was born at Kristiansand in Vest-Agder, Norway. His father was a sexton and a school teacher. In 1811 Arup was sent to Copenhagen to study, but had to end his studies due to lack of funds. After returning to Norway he worked for a while as a teacher, until he could take his theological exam at the Royal Frederick University (now University of Oslo). In the following years he worked in Ullensaker, Drammen and Bragernes. He was made Bishop of Kristiania in 1846, and remained in the position until 1874. Arup was also involved in politics, and in 1836 he was elected into the Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget) for Drammen constituency, where he was reelected in 1839, 1842 and 1845. Jens Lauritz Arup Seip (11 October 1905 – 5 September 1992) was a Norwegian historian originally trained as a medieval historian, but stood out as the strongest of his time in interpreting Norwegian political history in the 1800s, particularly known for having created the term " embedsmannsstaten".
